Language Learning Disabilities: Adolescents Receiving Psychological Therapy In Addition To Speech Language Therapy, Katelyn Grace Mcnair, Catherine L. Cotton Phd.
Undergraduate Research Conference
Specific learning disabilities are among the most common disability categories, in which students receive special education and/or related services in schools, according to the National Center for Education Statistics (2023). Research has shown an increase of understanding in the areas of reading, writing, and spelling in individuals with learning disabilities. More recently, Ghiasi, Sedrpoushan, Abedi, Soltani (2022), noted students with learning disabilities have a lower level of achievement, motivation, self-esteem, and a high level of depression. Advances in language literacy remediation, may not be enough to overcome factors such as decreased self-esteem and fear of failure (Wolter, DiLollo, Apel, 2006). …

Institutional Impact Of The Build Program: Postsecondary Education For Students With Intellectual Disabilities, Mary Lindell, Jessica Daniels, Jodi Wolkerstorfer
Day of Scholarship
The current higher education environment is plagued with declining enrollment (Eide, 2018) and shrinking budgets (Doyle, 2020) while historically under-represented and under-served students, including those with intellectual disabilities (ID) (Thoma, et al., 2011), have traditionally experienced limited access to higher education (Thelin, 2011). The purpose of this study was to research the institutional impact of the BUILD program, one university’s effort to increase access to and the effectiveness of higher education for all students, including those with ID, while simultaneously expanding the prospective student enrollment pool. Through a qualitative case study analysis, this research explored and evaluated the implementation and …
Promoting Skills In Children And Teens With Autism Spectrum Disorder Through Play And Steam, Meaghan Mcleod Mozingo, Krzysztof J. Rechowicz
Promoting Skills In Children And Teens With Autism Spectrum Disorder Through Play And Steam, Meaghan Mcleod Mozingo, Krzysztof J. Rechowicz
Modeling, Simulation and Visualization Student Capstone Conference
Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have a low employment rate. This is caused by a lack of support from employment resources and the negative stigma associated with common characteristics associated with ASD. With limited career-building activities and events, it is difficult for individuals with ASD to identify their skills, strengths, and career opportunities. Parental support is crucial when seeking employment opportunities for their children. Through the use of play, children with ASD engaged and explored their skills with science, technology, engineering, arts, and math-centered activities. This paper highlights the events and shows the proposed redesign for an additional workshop.

Promoting Self-Awareness And Self-Advocacy For Students With Disabilities, Caitlin Conroy
Undergraduate Research Competition
Using the ME! Lessons for Teaching Self-Awareness & Self-Advocacy (Cantley, Little, & Martin, n.d.) as a guideline, I created "bell ringers" to teach transition age students with disabilities about self-awareness and self-advocacy in rewards to their disability and IEP. I taught these skills to a small group of four students. Every day, these four students met for 10 minutes during the start of the day. The research conducted is self-study research (Hauge, 2021). For all students with disabilities, especially at the transition age, self-awareness and self-advocacy is so important. To be able to continue teaching these lessons after this experience, …

Let's Get Involved, Delaney Daly
Undergraduate Research Competition
This study taught student teacher interns on how to support students and parents to participate in Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings. While previous research has determined students with disabilities can learn the skills needed to participate in their IEP meetings, researchers suggested that educators need training on how to conduct IEP meetings in which students and parents will be active participants (Chandroo et al., 2018; Sanderson & Goldman, 2021). This study focused on teaching teachers to build relationships with parents and students to create a level of comfortability so that when in an IEP meeting, everyone has a comfortable environment …

National Youth Advocacy and Resilience Conference
It is important to empower students with information and understanding about trauma along with concepts and interventions for brain regulation and healing. When information about the impact of trauma is shared with students without first establishing a solid foundation for hope and change, it can do more harm than good. In this presentation, we will share guidelines and ideas for teaching key trauma-informed principles to students including physical, emotional and social regulation strategies as well as an understanding of the stress response.

We’ll start with our school’s motto, “Family, Love, Respect,” which is posted in nearly every hallway, office and gathering place in our school. We attempt to provide each student with a strong sense of each. Although ours is an alternative high school, filled with stories of trauma, neglect and despair, our students are resilient! With that in mind we have created a number of programs to encourage resilience, provide a healthy path forward, decrease student discipline, and foster student success. All of these programs, and the stories we share detailing what our students have overcome show just how resilient young …

Intersectionality And Disability, Jennifer Stringfellow, Sophie N. Jones
Together We RISE (Making Excellence Inclusive)
People with identified disabilities intersect every part of humanity – socioeconomic status, ethnicity, culture, geography, et al. – and are entitled to appropriate accommodations in public spaces. Sometimes, more often than we might expect, the accommodations we provide for individuals are beneficial to a much larger group because of this intersectionality. The presenters will offer research and practical information and will discuss with the audience how different accommodations in public spaces, in our classrooms – kindergarten through higher education – can have a larger impact and provide access and support for all. We will present research-based information and include the …

The purpose of this research was to determine the effectiveness of behavior specific praise on continuous student attention to tasks. Behavior specific praise is defined as a positive statement directed toward a student or group of students that acknowledged a desired behavior in specific, observable, and measurable terms. Past studies have shown a positive correlation between positive reinforcement and the students' engagement in the general education classroom. Current research also indicates that behavior specific praise has proven to be significantly beneficial for a wide range of students including students in the general education, special education, and gifted classroom. For this …

Trauma-Informed Teaching: Professional Development For School Staff, Heather Roesinger, Chelsea Williams, Tammy L. Hughes
Graduate Student Research Symposium
Trauma is defined as a response to a negative event that includes both an emotional and physiological component. Two thirds of children experience some form of a traumatic event by the age of 16 (Cavanaugh, 2016). Many youth with disabilities, particularly emotional and behavioral, have experienced trauma and show visible signs of difficulty in the classroom (Cavanaugh, 2016). Trauma-informed schools take a strengths-based approach and focus on building safe, positive environments and relationships. Research has provided evidence that a trauma-informed approach can be instrumental in supporting positive outcomes of children exposed to trauma, but school staff feel ill-equipped to support …

Adapting Applied Behavior Analysis In Autism Intervention To Improve Individualized Education For Children With Autism, Elisabeth Alonso
Adapting Applied Behavior Analysis In Autism Intervention To Improve Individualized Education For Children With Autism, Elisabeth Alonso
Symposium of Student Scholars
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) intervention for children diagnosed with autism provides detailed assessments of the clients’ abilities and guides skill acquisition with the goal of transitioning the client, often into a typical school classroom. The lack of accessible autism training and access to knowledgeable ABA professionals in school settings prevents teachers from engaging with their students on the autism spectrum. Furthermore, this gap in training does not equip teachers to follow through with the research-based interventions to improve students’ quality of life. Teachers must have an understanding of ABA in layman’s terms to improve the child’s classroom functioning. This research …

P-13 Predictors Of General Education Teachers Self-Efficacy For Educating Students With Asd, Renette Portecop-Prentice
Celebration of Research and Creative Scholarship
This study examines the influence of ASD-specific training or professional development, peer observations, feedback from consultation/collaboration and teacher attitudes on general education teacher’s self-efficacy beliefs for educating students with ASD, as well as whether knowledge mediates the effect of professional development on teacher self-efficacy. It is hypothesized that the proposed theoretical model of teacher self-efficacy for educating students with ASD will fit an empirical model based on collected data. Data from 536 participants have been collected and are being analyzed. Preliminary results suggest that the hypothesized model does not fit the empirical model. However, the factors appearing to have the …

Scholar Week 2016 - present
There is a need to understand and improve the skills of school staff regarding functional behavior assessments (FBAs) and behavior intervention plans (BIPs). Students who exhibit problematic behaviors are at risk for negative outcomes in school and in adulthood. Students with emotional disabilities, African American students, and male students have the most risk. The purpose of this study was to explore teachers’ and administrators’ skills and knowledge as they relate to developing and implementing FBAs and BIPs and to identify training needs in this area. The study may be of interest to school staff and others seeking to provide behavioral …
