The “core” of an engineering degree program typically comprises the concepts, equations, and technical skills needed, as well as their practical application to common problems of the profession. Research and Reflection on Learning and Teaching in Higher Education

‘Community’ is a pervasive concept at the University of Dayton, a Catholic, Marianist institution in Dayton, Ohio. As such, it was unknown how students who enrolled in community engaged learning (CEL) courses were different from their peers in demographic characteristics, previous experiential learning, and views of community engagement. Findings can inform CEL recruitment as well as evaluation of CEL outcomes, especially at institutions with a similar values orientation. This mixed-methods study indicates that among four semesters of students in three selected CEL courses, few differences were found with students in non-CEL control groups. The 2022 Global Voices Symposium occurred at a momentous time. In addition to the ongoing global pandemic, Russia had unleashed a brutal invasion of Ukraine. The presentations focused on students’ perspectives of study abroad, human rights, the role of women, COVID 19, new directions in study abroad, immigrant life, and the increasing importance of Africa. Each speaker brought a unique perspective to the conversation. Repeatedly, speakers spoke about the positive impact of global awareness in their personal and professional development. Policy And Practice: Evaluating Workflows And Communication For Maternity Leave At The University Of Dayton, Christina A. Beis, Kayla Harris, Gabby Campana

Reports from the Gender Equity Research Fellowship

Maternity leave experiences and policy workflows at the University of Dayton have not been formally reviewed since the creation of an all benefit-eligible employee paid maternity leave policy in 2017. This study examines the lived experience of faculty and staff who have taken maternity leave since the implementation of the policy and faculty, staff, and supervisor perceptions of the current leave policies and workflows. Interviews and surveys found a need for clearer documentation in policies, an expansion of parental leave for the non-birth parent, and supervisory support. The report concludes with recommendations based on this research for implementing updates to …

Libraries are places that hold the ability to connect people from different backgrounds and life experiences. However, despite that being the goal, sometimes stories are left out, experiences aren’t told, and identities are not represented. In this keynote address, Ione Damasco shares how her library has been able to make connections across campus with partners to develop and implement programming that fosters a more inclusive campus environment and how other libraries might do the same.

In 2016, the first Symposium on Race on the University of Dayton campus arose within a historical context of several events, including the nationwide racial crises beginning with Ferguson, Missouri, in 2014, and the subsequent emergence of the Black Lives Matter movement. The testimonies session was an interactive listening and dialogue event in which attendees listened together to stories submitted in advance that documented the Black student experience on campus. The goal of the session was to convene student staff and faculty to engage in a generative and critical conversation motivated by actual experiences. In attendance were students, staff, and faculty; together, we listened to four audio clips submitted by current and former students who narrated campus experiences. Though American colleges have wrestled with a variety of challenges at different times, the one constant problem has been anti-Black racism. It is a focus at the symposium. University of Dayton alumni articulated many challenges faced by Black students on campus. Representing different generations, speakers discussed their UD experience, and irrespective of the decade in which they were students at the University, their descriptions of marginalization were strikingly similar. Currently enrolled Black students told similar stories to those discussed decades ago. Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

To what extent do universities respect human rights? Despite the prevailing view that universities are bastions of progressive ideas with a bias for rights protection, anecdotal evidence suggests that they diverge significantly in their commitment to promote and protect human rights, even within the U.S. To this point, though, there exists no systematic measure of university human rights commitments. In this manuscript, we introduce the first such indicator - the Campus Human Rights Index (CHRI). We describe the measure and introduce our initial ranking of universities.
