Parental Involvement Impacting Student Academic Success In Avid, Marisol Jurado Jun 2016

Parental Involvement Impacting Student Academic Success In Avid, Marisol Jurado

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Student academic success is a product of many factors, but it is important to investigate which factors are most influential when it comes to increasing student success. Recent literature investigates parental involvement as one of these factors, and evidence indicates that increased involvement typically results in increased academic success. The current study examined the impact of parenting, communication, learning at home, and volunteering (according to Epstein, 1997) on academic success. Participants included parents of 7th grade students who are involved in the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program at a school district in Northern Colorado. Parents completed surveys measuring …

School Stress, Academic Performance, And Coping In College Freshmen, Curtis Hill Jun 2016

School Stress, Academic Performance, And Coping In College Freshmen, Curtis Hill

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

The 2010 annual freshmen survey from the University of California Los Angeles stated that nearly half of all freshmen report having low to average levels of emotional health. This is the largest percentage of students in the low range of emotional health since the survey began over 25 years ago. Lower levels of mental and emotional health have been found to correlate with higher levels of stress. If students have high levels of stress and ineffective coping skills, this may negatively affect their academic performance. The purpose of my research was to understand how school stress, coping, and academic performance …

Leisure Behaviors Of Freshmen At The University Of Northern Colorado, Caitlin Owens

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

The purpose of this research is to gain insight on the leisure behaviors of freshmen students at the University of Northern Colorado and how they relate to stress, independence, and GPA. An online and paper convenience sample of 160 freshmen completed the 31-item questionnaire composed of leisure behavior ratings, the College Student Stress Scale, and independence level indicators. Visual inspection of the correlation matrixes revealed that involvement in religious activities is most highly correlated with GPA, drugs and alcohol activity is most highly correlated with feeling stressed over attaining goals, and doing homework is most highly correlated with GPA. Overall …

Censorship In History Textbooks: How Knowledge Of The Past Is Being Constructed In Schools, Tyler Brunner Jun 2016

Censorship In History Textbooks: How Knowledge Of The Past Is Being Constructed In Schools, Tyler Brunner

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Pressure groups organized around political correctness and religious conservatism lead textbook publishers to self-censor. Such self-censorship ultimately results in dry, unenlightening textbooks. Lifeless material draws education away from more developed forms of teaching history. This study demonstrates how textbook publishers' censoring textbooks fosters a teaching of history that degrades knowledge and promotes specific ideologies.

Retention And Persistence For Underrepresented Students In Multicultural Greek Life: A Case Study, Carlos Cruz Jun 2016

Retention And Persistence For Underrepresented Students In Multicultural Greek Life: A Case Study, Carlos Cruz

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

With increasing numbers of underrepresented students attending college in the United States and concomitant low college graduation rates from four-year institutions for these same students, it is important to explore possible interventions that may increase persistence and retention rates among these populations. The research literature suggests a positive association between students’ participation in Greek Life and persistence/retention from one year to the next. While the literature regarding the relationship between traditional Greek Life and student persistence and retention is robust, the same cannot be said for research on Multicultural Greek Life. If the same relationships are expected to hold between …

Influence Of Grandparents On First-Generation College Students, Brittany Herrington Jun 2016

Influence Of Grandparents On First-Generation College Students, Brittany Herrington

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

This qualitative research study explores the relationship of grandparents as a source of knowledge, support and advice for first-generation college students’ decision to pursue higher education. Grandparents can have a positive influence on first-generation college students through emotional support and guidance through the student’s educational career. This study explores students’ perceptions of how they interact with their grandparents for major decisions like pursuing higher education and achieving life goals. Although research has been conducted on first-generation college students there is minimal research on grandparents’ involvement. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with five to seven participants, who were recruited through …

Exploring The Outcomes And Perceptions Of Traditional And Post-Baccalaureate Asls Students, Kashia D. Bayard Jun 2016

Exploring The Outcomes And Perceptions Of Traditional And Post-Baccalaureate Asls Students, Kashia D. Bayard

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

An increase in the number of post-baccalaureate students returning to college for additional education provides a need to better understand this growing population. Studies on program outcomes for traditional and post-baccalaureate students have focused primarily in the medical and nursing fields. These studies lack detailed insight into the student’s experiences and perceptions. Within the Audiology and Speech-Language Sciences fields there is also limited research on traditional and post-baccalaureate student outcomes and experiences. This mixed methods study examined the outcomes and explored the experiences and perceptions of traditional and post-baccalaureate students in the Audiology and Speech-Language Sciences program at the University …

College Academic Success: Prior Motivations And Perceptions Of Parents, Cherise Frazier Jun 2016

College Academic Success: Prior Motivations And Perceptions Of Parents, Cherise Frazier

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

What makes a student succeed or fail in college? The study investigates the relationship between autonomous motivation and success in higher education, with success defined as positive attitudes toward college (e.g., interest, value for college) and being in the honors program instead of on academic probation. The study is based on two hypotheses. First, college students who have parents that foster their autonomy will be more successful. Second, students who chose to attend college for autonomous reasons will be more successful. For the study, 99 participants in the honors program or on academic probation completed a survey assessing parental warmth, …

College Experiences: First-Generation Female Undergraduates At The University Of Northern Colorado, Andrea Rascon Jun 2016

College Experiences: First-Generation Female Undergraduates At The University Of Northern Colorado, Andrea Rascon

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

The number of women entering college and receiving degrees is continuously increasing while simultaneously first-generation students also are making up a larger portion of college students. Though numbers have increased, both populations are frequently viewed as vulnerable when it comes to succeeding in college. Much research has covered each populace separately. Minimal focus on first-generation female (FGF) students has limited the understanding of what the everyday college environment offers to enhance academic, social, and ethical experiences. Past research has focused on financing and academics; however, this study’s purpose was to explore the collegiate experiences that contribute to FGF student’s success …

Using Self-Determination Theory To Examine The Difference In Motivation Of African American College Students And Students With Other Ethnic Backgrounds, Elia R. Martin Jun 2016

Using Self-Determination Theory To Examine The Difference In Motivation Of African American College Students And Students With Other Ethnic Backgrounds, Elia R. Martin

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship among academic self-concept, motivation and academic achievement among African American and other college students with different ethnicities. Self-Determination Theory is used as a framework to help understand college students’ academic motivation. Existing research in this area has not tended to focus much on ethnicity; yet preliminary information suggests that associations among academic self-concept, motivation, and achievement of African American college students take distinct forms from other ethnic groups. This study uses the Academic Motivational Scale (Vallerand, 1989) to measure intrinsic and extrinsic motivation for college students, the Academic Self-Concept Scale …
