Motivational Situations Of Choice, Charles N. Elliott, Paul A. Story

The Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research

The present research explores situations that demonstrate enhancing effects on motivation based on the amount of choice seen by individuals. Individuals who are intrinsically motivated see more choice in certain academic settings, including those that foster self-regulation and autonomy. Extrinsically motivated individuals are predicted to see more promise in reward and external regulation strategies. We identified six separate situations: a free will situation, a learning of materials situation, an instructor feedback situation, an extra credit situation, and two time-based situations. This article presents a rationale for the infusion of social justice into kinesiology programs for the purpose of reducing inequities in society. Specifically, the current climate for social justice is considered and discussed using examples from an university-inspired service-learning initiative, law, and politics. Of note are the following areas of discussion: (a) differentiation between social diversity and social justice, (b) public pedagogy as a means by which to inspire service action, (c) the creation of climates for speech and application of social justice, (d) modeling and socialization for equity, and (e) the neoliberal threat to inclusiveness. Collectively, the world's population spends about 3 billion hours a week playing video games. To reach game-playing audiences of all ages, educators, including library instructors, are embracing game-based learning to engage and motivate students the same way that games do. In looking at the collective wisdom on what makes a good game, and providing concrete examples of library gaming projects, this paper discusses the best practices for creating virtual and virtual-reality hybrid games for bibliographic instruction. George Washington University Libraries were tasked with transforming support for graduate students while taking into account increasing numbers of online students, off-campus programs, and students working full-time. In addition, due to librarian turnover and other factors, we needed to accomplish our goal with a reduced workforce and without reducing services and instruction to our undergraduate population. Our solution focuses our graduate instruction on in-person workshops and digital objects (research guides and “How-Do-I?” videos), along with a “toolkit” with scripts, handouts, presentations, and outlines so that, while one librarian may be the expert (e.g. citation management), any librarian can have the …

The MSU Libraries has developed a comprehensive approach to meeting the research and professional development needs of graduate students. The University of Missouri-Kansas City's University Libraries played a major role in starting a campus-wide Graduate Writing Initiative at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. The Graduate Writing Initiative is a campus-wide effort to improve the process, quality, and impact of graduate student writing. Despite the challenges of reaching a graduate student population of commuters, full-time workers, parents, and online learners, UMKC Libraries helped devise ways to extend the reach of the Graduate Writing Initiative to all. The University of Houston (UH) is a Carnegie-designated Tier One public research university that strives to serve more than 7,000 graduate and professional students. Graduate students have been historically underserved by the UH Libraries, however, in recent years the Libraries have made expanding services to graduate students a strategic initiative. UH Library administration has designated targeting specific user groups, including graduate students, with revitalized marketing and innovative programing a high priority.

The paper presents a series of case studies that describe and demonstrate successful collaborations created via partnerships with instructors, departments, and other groups in both multi-campus and online environments at Georgia Perimeter College (GPC) where all three authors worked together as librarians for five years. The case studies illustrate the use of LibGuides in building librarian-librarian and librarian-­faculty partnerships to support teaching and other campus activities. This discussion includes successful strategies for establishing connections and adopting LibGuides as communication tool for collaborative projects.
