This thesis represents an investigation of the effects of increased access to task completion activities on the behavior of institutionalized retarded clients. The hypothesis was that increased access to task completion leisure activities (non-competitive free time activities requiring the subject to attend to a constructive task during at least five free time periods over the course of the study) would result in reduced frequency of unacceptable social behaviors in a group of institutionalized retarded clients. Energy-efficient designs in clothing, interior architecture and furnishings were evaluated (a) to assess consumers’ attitudes toward the designs, (b) to compare acceptability levels of participants who were knowledgeable in the home energy field with those who were less knowledgeable and (c) to determine if consumers had a preference for using housing, clothing or furnishings in meeting their thermal comfort needs. Four designs generated by the University of Tennessee-Energy Design competition were evaluated: a leisure outfit, a lounging dress, a water-storage collector (room divider and coffee tables) and a solar waterbed. The study was designed to determine the problems that low and middle socioeconomic status families have in clothing their elementary school-age children. Comparisons were made of the consumer buying attitudes and practices of mothers of elementary school-age children from middle-and low-socioeconomic status families in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. Differences between the groups were measured on a 92- item Likert scale questionnaire on the variables-planned buying, appropriateness, conformity, labeling, faulty merchandise, care, serviceability, comfort, and versatility. One-way analysis of variance was used to determine significant differences. The middle socioeconomic group indicated a more knowledgeable attitude on all the scales. Data from personal …
