This thesis explored the integration of automated essay scoring (AES) software into the writing curriculum for high level ESOL students (levels 3, 4, and 5 on a 1-5 scale) at a high school in Miami, Fl. Issues for Haitian Creole speaking students were also explored. The Spanish and Haitian Creole speaking students were given the option to write notes, outlines, and planning sheets in their L1.

The research project explores the underlying experiences and causes behind the aversion many K-12 students hold toward writing. Consisting of a questionnaire, individual interviews, and a focus group, the study delves into students’ feelings and attitudes toward writing— allowing their voices to be heard, in the hopes of improving future writing instruction in schools. With the exorbitant amounts spent on writing remediation constantly climbing, student apprehension toward writing is a problem that must be addressed. This study seeks answers to this problem from the people who should know the most about it—the students.

Two largely independent bodies of literature exist on both teaching to promote students' critical and creative thinking abilities and teaching to promote the shift between novice and more expert writing. The author looks closely at both bodies of literature and merges common principles to create an extended curriculum unit designed to teach simultaneously toward expert thinking and expert writing.
