Data Parties I Have Known: Lessons Learned And Best Practices For Success, Nancy K. Franz

Increased focus on data-driven decision making requires Extension professionals to excel at data analysis and interpretation. Data parties have become increasingly popular for involving stakeholders in making sense of data. As these parties become more frequently used by Extension professionals, best practices are emerging from lessons learned to improve the process and enhance the outcomes. These practices include designing discussion questions to fit the specific goals of the process, engaging a team of key partners, setting a theme and party environment that appeals to the participants and fits the context, providing appropriate data visualization tools, and using strong facilitation practices.

Yeast is an affordable and convenient organism to introduce to secondary education, and students can learn a lot about biology through it. Objectives: Students will be able to use a model of a zombie outbreak to collect data, organize data on an Excel sheet, create a scatter plot with data, and analyze/interpret what the created graphs mean, as well as a couple sample graphs. It seeks to answer the question, “What is the projected human casualty rate?”

Main Activity: Students will run the model on Agentsheets to collect raw data, then record that data onto an Excel sheet, and plot graphs of the data to identify patterns.

This study examined opportunities for participation and learning for "struggling" readers in a sixth grade science classroom. Literacy practices, language differences, activity structures, and the social and cultural identities and associated practices and everyday funds of knowledge of both "struggling" and nonstruggling readers in one sixth grade science classroom were documented and analyzed using a qualitative research design. Over sixteen hours of audio and video recordings as well as numerous student work samples were transcribed and analyzed. This report is part of Project Steve. Project Steve is, among other things, the first scientific analysis of the sex, geographic location, and body size of scientists named Steve. We performed this research for the best of all reasons: we discovered that we had lots of data. No scientist can resist the opportunity to analyze data, regardless of where that data came from or why it was gathered.
