Assessing Student Understanding Of Reasoning Using Argument-Based Contrast Matrices, Ethan Geheb Apr 2018

Assessing Student Understanding Of Reasoning Using Argument-Based Contrast Matrices, Ethan Geheb

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There is strong national interest in increasing student proficiency in STEM, which includes the learning and practice of scientific argumentation. The codevelopment of scientific knowledge and argumentation has shown to positively influence student general understanding of argument construction, scientific knowledge and principles. Research indicates students continue to struggle with constructing complete arguments, with specific difficulty in correctly incorporating reasoning. Numerous frameworks have been developed to support student learning about argumentation. These frameworks contain common teaching strategies for introducing and teaching reasoning within the context of a science classroom. However, these strategies do not specifically target student struggle with using reasoning ...

Strategies To Support Student Argument And Argumentative Writing In A Secondary Stem Classroom, Laura Arnold Dec 2016

Strategies To Support Student Argument And Argumentative Writing In A Secondary Stem Classroom, Laura Arnold

Education and Human Development Master's Theses

Argumentation is a critical goal of today’s schools as a way to develop rational citizens who can critique the validity claims about phenomenon in society and the natural world. This work reviews current educational research about the best practices when it comes to teaching and using argumentation in STEM disciplines. As a result of this literature review, three strategies are identified and implemented in a secondary STEM classroom to determine their impact. The specific strategies used to support argumentation were a clear argument structure, collaborative discourse, and engaging, inquiry based tasks. While the sample size is small, the literature ...

Characterizing The Changes In Teaching Practice During First Semester Implementation Of An Argument-Based Inquiry Approach In A Middle School Science Classroom, Brian Robert John Pinney May 2013

Characterizing The Changes In Teaching Practice During First Semester Implementation Of An Argument-Based Inquiry Approach In A Middle School Science Classroom, Brian Robert John Pinney

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to characterize ways in which teaching practice in classroom undergoing first semester implementation of an argument-based inquiry approach changes in whole-class discussion. Being that argument is explicitly called for in the Next Generation Science Standards and is currently a rare practice in teaching, many teachers will have to transform their teaching practice for inclusion of this feature. Most studies on Argument-Based Inquiry (ABI) agree that development of argument does not come easily and is only acquired through practice.

Few studies have examined the ways in which teaching practice changes in relation to the big ...

A Compilation Of Rubrics To Be Used In Chemistry To Emphasize Argumentative Writing In The Science Classroom, Rachel M. Coon Dec 2012

A Compilation Of Rubrics To Be Used In Chemistry To Emphasize Argumentative Writing In The Science Classroom, Rachel M. Coon

Education and Human Development Master's Theses

The new Common Core Standards for New York State and the Framework for K-12 Science Education Standards have a main focus on implementing argumentative writing into each content area. Some form of argumentative writing has always been used in the science curriculum through the creation of a lab report. However, an argumentative lab report must contain a counterclaim and specific sources of evidence to be considered a real argument.

An argument does not have to be as formal as a lab report. Arguments can be as informal as a journal article or a narrative story. As long as the main ...
