The Effects Of A Short Term Preacademic Total Approach Program On The Language Development Of Disadvantaged Children, Doug Richter

This research tests a short term total academic language development program on the development of language delayed children. It was hypothesized that an increase in vocabulary and response length after a six week treatment program would be reflected on the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test and the Mean Length of Response Test. The treatment program utilized both the group and tutorial approach emphasizing the basic skills associated with listening, language, reading, writing and arithmetic. Teacher education has too largely concerned itself with a study of schooling rather than a study of education. In the next generation, given the concerns that I’ve talked about, we’re going to have to look much more intensively, on the one hand, at how much human beings learn as biological creatures and, on the other hand, at all the cultural and legal constraints on learning that exist. Individualized Developmental Reading at Gilbert High School, Gilbert, Iowa, is a one semester elective course for students in grades nine through twelve.

The course is developmental in that through it a student is helped to improve his reading abilities in the areas of vocabulary, comprehension, speed, and study skills regardless of his abilities when he begins his work.

The course is individualized in that each student works independently on materials that will help him develop his reading skills; very little whole class or small group instruction is included.
