Impact Of Engineering Ambassador Programs On Student Development, Thalia Anagnos, Alicia Lyman-Holt, Claudia Marin-Artieda, Ellen Momsen

This study highlights the positive impact of participation in an engineering ambassador program on students from two universities: Oregon State University which is a large public university in a college town with a 13% minority student body, and Howard University, a medium sized private university with a relatively small engineering program in an urban setting enrolling a primarily minority population. Although these ambassador programs have a major goal of service to the university and engineering program, they serve an equally important goal of developing the skills and attitudes of the ambassadors themselves. Despite the rapid growth in the adoption of online learning, there is a dearth of detailed information on effective business models, business strategies and effective practices on which to build sustainable online education programs. A survey instrument was developed as an initial attempt to define business models and business strategies for online learning. The survey results yielded some interesting data about which online learning financial models seem to have more or less "control" of which business functions. Despite the rapid growth in the adoption of distance education, and asynchronous learning networks in particular, there is a dearth of detailed information on effective business models, business strategies and effective practices on which to build sustainable online education programs. What has been published on the business side of online education tends to focus on the costs and economic models, the growing for-profit sector, and new organizational approaches such as spin-offs and virtual university consortia. There are very few detailed, descriptive studies focused on the business models, strategies and effective practices of online education in U.S. degree-granting institutions.

Many institutions of higher education are designing spaces to facilitate learning. Libraries have created information or learning commons to support this activity. This article draws from the literature and best practices to explore this new direction. Academic libraries have focused on student learning and the teaching of skills and strategies that develop information literacy competency. The increase in time-to degree and attrition rates of students in doctoral programs highlight the importance of identifying challenges students face and developing support services to address them. This study explored the barriers and challenges Ed.D. students face while pursuing their degree along with the effectiveness of a doctoral support center (DSC) in assisting doctoral candidates. A survey administered to 103 students inquired into participants' experiences with their program, dissertation chair, and the DSC. In addition, nine student volunteers participated in focus groups and responded to questions related to the DSC, the program, and the advisor. Time management and relationship …

This paper describes the "practitioner-as-researcher" model of research, an alternative methodology that is intended to bring about institutional change. We developed this approach through the Diversity Scorecard project in which we work with teams of practitioners to examine institutional data disaggregated by ethnicity in order to identify inequities in educational outcomes. The practitioners, themselves, conduct the research on their own campuses to discover areas of inequities. This, in turn, impacts their practices and motivation to bring about systemic institutional change.
