Reclaiming Social Justice: A Position Paper Investigating Competing Representations Of Adult Education And Its Purpose In A Neo-Liberal World, C. Amelia Davis, Keara Sodano
C. Amelia Davis
The push towards globalization puts the world’s wealth in the hands of only a few, creating political and social discourses that lead to competing representations of adult education and its purpose. In this paper, we argue that neo-liberalism has had divergent effects on the conceptualization and practices of adult education, fostering conflicting ideologies and practices of human resource development and social justice. We charge adult educators to reclaim social justice as the purpose of adult education, establishing a force of transformation and communication that calls for a new social order of collectivism, justice, and democracy

Developing Comprehension With New Literacies, Connie Mcdonald, Laura E. Jones
Connie McDonald
How can teachers help students develop comprehension strategies and skills in the era of new literacies? Traditional and online texts are similar in some aspects but very different in other ways. The focus of the presentation is on developing comprehension in elementary students by connecting traditional and online texts with new literacies.

From Embedded To Integrated: Digital Information Literacy And New Teaching Models For Academic Librarians, Rob Morrison, Larissa Garcia

This paper describes our experience launching LIBR 200, moving beyond traditional library instruction to integrating digital information literacy into the larger curriculum. By creating a credit course that focuses on digital information literacy, the NLU Library was able to fill a void in the general education curriculum, thus making it possible for LIBR 200 to be included in undergraduate degree programs. Because librarians are faculty and have fostered a positive and collaborative reputation throughout the University, the library faculty role has evolved to include participation in program development and the development and teaching of library credit courses in order to …

Using A Sequential Exploratory Mixed-Method Design To Examine Racial Hyperprivilege In Higher Education, Nolan L. Cabrera
Nolan L. Cabrera
This chapter uses a mixed-method approach to critically examine white male college students’ racial ideologies and the experiences that influence racial ideology formation. It highlights both how racial privilege is recreated in higher education and how mixedmethods and intersectionality approaches to institutional research allow more robust analytical possibilities.
The Politics Of Education Reform: Lessons Learned From New Orleans, Robert A. Garda Jr.
The Politics Of Education Reform: Lessons Learned From New Orleans, Robert A. Garda Jr.
Robert A. Garda
Hurricane Katrina demolished the educational facilities and state leaders took the opportunity to raze the broken educational governance structures in New Orleans. Leaders re-created the Orleans Parish School District based on the education reforms sweeping the nation: school choice, accountability, state takeover of failing schools, and charter schools. The city is now the proving ground for modern education reforms and policymakers from around the country are watching closely. The mistakes made and lessons learned in New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina can act as a roadmap for states and districts moving toward the “new” education model - choice plans, charter schools …

The White Interest In School Integration, Robert A. Garda Jr.
Robert A. Garda
Scholarship concerning desegregation, affirmative action and voluntary integration is primarily, if not exclusively, focused on whether such policies harm or benefit minorities. Scant attention is paid to the benefits whites receive in multiracial schools despite these interests underpinning over thirty years of Supreme Court integration jurisprudence. In this article, I explore the academic and social benefits whites receive in multiracial schools, and I do so from a white parent’s perspective. The article begins by explaining the interest-convergence theory and how white interests explain the course and content of the Supreme Court’s desegregation jurisprudence. White parents must understand that their “buy-in” …

Faculty Success: Developing A Research And Publication Agenda, Kathleen P. King

Anyone associated with higher education will acknowledge that tenure track faculty have to perform a fantastic balancing act. Compared to an administrative or line role in an organization, higher education faculty have tremendous autonomy and freedom. However, they face competing demands of many different (and good) opportunities, and for them the stakes are always high. Help is here! This article introduces a powerful strategy for staying on track in the research strand of this competitive journey.
Charter Schools: Are They Really The Answer?, Marquis Grant
Charter Schools: Are They Really The Answer?, Marquis Grant

Charter schools have become a leading alternative to traditional public education, where children of color have historically experienced low academic performance and dismal results on state-mandated testing. Whether these institutions are, in fact, the answer to what ails education is a matter of debate. Those who support charter schools point to the flexibility these institutions have to create more comprehensive, student-focused curricula that caters to the learning styles of the students being served. As a result, students experience more academic and personal success. Opponents argue that charter schools are nothing more than band-aids for an even bigger problem, namely the …

Culturally Relevant Information Literacy, Rob Morrison

This paper is a qualitative case study of the role of culture in the information-seeking process. This study revealed that culture does impact how we locate, evaluate and value information and thus specific kinds of knowledge. Librarians and educators must deeply engage in discussions on literacy and how information is tied to knowledge that does not limit learners to the Western worldview. Information Literacy will always be an abstract term until integrated into knowledge production.

This paper is a qualitative case study of the role of culture in the information-seeking process. This study revealed that culture does affect how we locate, evaluate and value information and thus specific kinds of knowledge. Librarians and educators must engage in discussions on “Critical Information Literacy” where information is tied to knowledge creation that does not limit learners to a specific cultural worldview. Information and information-seeking processes cannot be separated from knowledge production

Many of the challenges librarians face in the 21st century have existed for years and reflect the nature of higher education and society in the United States. One issue the presenters have observed is that librarians, like many educators, react to rapidly changing systems, pressures, economics, and technologies by “balancing” workloads and budgets and not by deeply reflecting on how to change strategies in order to integrate themselves more fully into academic curricula, prove the library’s value to administrators, and develop meaningful services and resources. In order to thrive and survive, librarians must be proactive at their institutions in areas …

One L Revisited: Tales From The Back Bench, Robert R.M. Verchick

My move to Harvard Law was an exciting, but sometimes frustrating transition. The law school community was large and anonymous, the famous Bauhaus dormitories (designed by Walter Gropius) part Habitrail and part shoebox factory, the eyes of campus administrators a baleful gray. I had come with a bachelor's degree in English (English!) from a west coast univer-sity that called itself “the Farm,” a campus known for fragrant eucalyptus and a pride of lion-colored hills. Harvard Law was certainly no “Farm,” and to my eye it was no “Hundred-Acre Wood” either. Whimsy? Forget it. . . .

Exploring Effective Support Practices For Doctoral Students' Degree Completion, Edlyn V. Peña, Ilda Jimenez Y West, Gokce Gokalp, Linda Fischer, Jarrett Gupton

The increase in time-to degree and attrition rates of students in doctoral programs highlight the importance of identifying challenges students face and developing support services to address them. This study explored the barriers and challenges Ed.D. students face while pursuing their degree along with the effectiveness of a doctoral support center (DSC) in assisting doctoral candidates. A survey administered to 103 students inquired into participants' experiences with their program, dissertation chair, and the DSC. In addition, nine student volunteers participated in focus groups and responded to questions related to the DSC, the program, and the advisor. Time management and relationship …

In addition, the chapter briefly shares strategies and examples of how they might be used. The book will have an entire chapter dedicated to assistive technology as well. This is a popularized assistive technology chapter for generalist, NON special education, faculty to become acquainted with readily available and free resources. …
