Background: The various pressures on nurses in their practice environment, given the complexity of care, have exposed the confusion around the role definition and level of professional identity (PI) of future nurses. To support them in their practice, it is important throughout their education to know their commitment, representations, and sense of identity with respect to their future profession. To our knowledge, there is no measurement tool in the literature that can be used to measure the PI of nursing students throughout their education, given its complex multidimensional nature.

Objective: Based on a framework that takes into account …

Jack Mezirow’s transformative learning theory provides a framework in which to explore learning experiences that facilitate the Registered Practical Nurses (RPN) who returns to school to upgrade their credentials to that of a Registered Nurse (RN). It is through self-exploration and critically reflection upon previous nursing knowledge that RPNs can begin to enhance their knowledge and transform their practice. Mezirow claims there are precursor steps that adult learners contemplate as they engage in the process of perspective transformation which is initiated by disorientating dilemmas. RPNs who return to school to upgrade their credentials to that of an RN need to …

Increasingly internet social networking sites are used in healthcare to support, communicate and offer information platforms between healthcare providers, users, and the public. Undergraduate nursing students draw on various sources of evidence to inform best-practice decisions in collaboration with patients and the healthcare team. Student or patient-initiated access of information from social networking sites necessitates high levels of informatics literacy. While students may reveal adept social networking site navigation skills, their capacity to appraise and apply information from these sites to their nursing practice, in ways that demonstrate informatics competence, requires further exploration. The purpose of this education project was …

Introduction and Background: Ensuring an appropriate clinical experience for students is becoming more challenging in the context of a global nursing shortage, more acutely ill clientele, and limited numbers of educators, academics and clinical instructors. Near Peer Learning Activities (NPLA) have been shown to be effective and may help students to feel prepared and confident to begin the clinical rotation. This study explored nursing students’ experiences in their first medical-surgical practicum following a NPLA involving Health and Physical Assessment (HPA). Methods: Educators at one Canadian University recently designed and implemented a NPLA in the clinical setting where junior nursing …

The recent introduction of medical assistance in dying (MAiD) has significant implications for healthcare workers, nurse educators, and society at large. The aim was to understand students’ perceptions of their educational preparation regarding MAiD and identify potential gaps in existing knowledge and skills. A qualitative design and thematic analysis were used. …
