Assessing Professionalism Using The Objective Structured Clinical Exam, Urip Purwono, Michele M. Carlin, Susan V. Barrett, Eric J. Alper, Wendy L. Gammon, Michele P. Pugnaire

Office of Institutional Research, Evaluation, and Assessment Publications and Presentations

The Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE) is widely used as an assessment tool. Traditionally, the OSCE measures history taking, physical exam, and interview skills. More recently, the OSCE has also been utilized to assess professionalism. Because episodes of unprofessional behavior are situational and therefore difficult to track, a case was designed to present a special challenge that might identify shortfalls in professionalism. A scale was also developed to measure this behavior in each OSCE encounter.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether professionalism could be adequately assessed by using common OSCE cases or whether a designated case with ...

Together For Kids: First Year Report: A Project Of Community Healthlink, Inc., Lynn Hennigan, Carole C. Upshur, Melodie Wenz-Gross

Implementation Science and Practice Advances Research Center Publications

The Together for Kids (TFK) project grew out of two years of work of over 30 childcare, health care, child welfare, and social service agencies concerned about early childhood mental health issues. These concerned constituents, like others across the country, were responding to an increase in the incidence of young children exhibiting challenging behaviors that were resulting in disrupted early childhood classrooms and children being expelled from programs (Grannon et al, 1999; Swanson, 2001).

The importance of addressing the needs of these children at an early stage has been emphasized by a broad array of mental health and childcare professionals ...

Using Peplau's Theory To Examine The Psychosocial Factors Associated With Hiv-Infected Women's Difficulty In Taking Their Medications, Janet Lynn Douglass, Richard Sowell, Kenneth D. Phillips

Faculty Publications

Although combination therapies slow progression of HIV disease, HIV-infected women face new challenges that must be overcome to increase their life expectancy. One challenge is adherence to strict, and often unpleasant, drug regimens. Peplau's Theory of Interpersonal Relationships provides a framework for identifying and examining factors that influence medication adherence, in particular difficulties in taking medication. A descriptive, correlational design was used to test associations between difficulty taking HIV medications and a woman's relationship with her primary healthcare provider (PHCP), depression, HIV-specific emotional and tangible support, present life satisfaction, family functioning, HIV-related symptoms, AIDS beliefs and perceptions, medication ...

The Development Of A Physical Education Teachers' Physical Activity Self-Efficacy Instrument, Jeffrey J. Martin, Pamela Hodges Kulinna Apr 2003

The Development Of A Physical Education Teachers' Physical Activity Self-Efficacy Instrument, Jeffrey J. Martin, Pamela Hodges Kulinna

Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies

In the present investigation a questionnaire was developed to assess physical education teachers' self-efficacy for teaching classes in which their students were engaged in high levels of physical activity (i.e., at least 50% of class time). Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses resulted in the development of a 16-item, 4-factor, multidimensional physical education teachers' physical activity self-efficacy scale (PETPAS) that produced reliable and valid scores. The Student factor reflected teachers' efficacy for managing students who didn't enjoy or value physical activity. The Time factor was indicative of teachers' efficacy when they didn't have enough time to teach. The ...

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether high systolic blood pressure (SBP) at the time of initial diagnosis of chronic renal failure in dogs was associated with increased risk of uremic crisis, risk of dying, or rate of decline in renal function. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. ANIMALS: 45 dogs with spontaneous chronic renal failure. PROCEDURE: Dogs were assigned to 1 of 3 groups on the basis of initial SBP (high, intermediate, low); Kaplan-Meier and Cox proportional hazards methods were used to estimate the association between SBP and development of a uremic crisis and death.
