The Effects Of Added Purpose On Fine Motor Performance In Learning Disabled Children, Sarah Lynn Austin Dec 1989

The Effects Of Added Purpose On Fine Motor Performance In Learning Disabled Children, Sarah Lynn Austin

Master's Theses

The idea that occupations which offer added levels of purpose elicit a high quality of performance is widely accepted within occupational therapy. In this experiment involving fine motor performance, fifty-three learning disabled children were randomly assigned to two groups. It was hypothesized that children cutting out a circle, presented as a wheel which would complete a paper truck, would cut more accurately than those who cut out the same circle without the suggestion of it being used as a wheel. Accuracy was assessed by measuring the area of the children's cutting errors. The experimental design included the use of ...

Teaching Critical And Creative Thinking Skills As Part Of The Technical Communications Curriculum, Anne Harrington Sep 1989

Teaching Critical And Creative Thinking Skills As Part Of The Technical Communications Curriculum, Anne Harrington

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

I incorporated critical thinking instruction in the writing curriculum by using three writing projects: journal writing, a policy paper on AIDS, and an assignment to evaluate grammar checkers. In their journal writing students both generated and evaluated ideas. In the AIDS project, they reinforced these convergent and divergent thinking skills within the context of a real-world issue. For the software project, students practiced thinking skills in an arena that was more technical and objective, but in which they were evaluating fundamental writing criteria. These diverse assignments, based on a philosophically compatible approach to the teaching of writing, helped students develop ...

Desensitization To Medical Examining Equipment Through Learner Control In A Child With Severe Mental Retardation, Michael Giangreco, William J. Keogh

College of Education and Social Services Faculty Publications

While the psychological literature is replete with examples of desensitization to phobic stimuli, few studies have documented successful interventions conducted with individuals identified as mentally retarded. The study describes desensitization to basic medical examining equipment in a youngster with severe mental retardation and autistic tendencies. Following desensitization to feared stimuli through the repeated exposure of baseline, intervention was initiated on the remaining feared stimuli through a learner control technique which combined modeling, behavioral rehearsal, and a variation of contact desensitization (Ritter, 1968). Results of a return-to-baseline design suggested that the medical examinations feared most by the child were of the ...

1989 Norden Distinguished Teacher, Neil Dyer Jan 1989

1989 Norden Distinguished Teacher, Neil Dyer

Iowa State University Veterinarian

One of the first things I noticed while interviewing Dr. Ron Myers as the 1989 recipient of Norden Distinguished Teacher Award was an identical commendation on the wall from 1984. The frequency with which an instructor may receive the Norden Award is every five years; Ron Myers received his second one as they say, ASAP. When the award was presented last spring the entire student body gave him a standing ovation. That says something about his consistent dedication, enthusiasm and excellence. Indicative of this deep concern for veterinary education, he is, among other things, chairman of the curriculum committee and ...
