Pentylenetetrazol-Induced Seizures In Pigeons And The Effects Of Ethosuximide Thereon, Jakubow Dec 1988

Pentylenetetrazol-Induced Seizures In Pigeons And The Effects Of Ethosuximide Thereon, Jakubow

Master's Theses

Previous research has shown that ethosuximide in high enough doses will disrupt operant responding in pigeons. Whether or not these same doses will protect against seizure activity in this species has not been previously tested.

To test this question a system for scoring pentylenetetrazol-induced seizures in pigeons was developed and the effects of ethosuximide on such seizures were evaluated. In Experiment 1 pentylenetetrazol at 15, 27 and 47 mg/kg reliably induced seizures. In Experiment 2 non-behaviorally active and behaviorally active doses of ethosuximide were tested for their seizure controlling effectiveness.

Doses of 20, 40, 80, 160 and 320 mg ...

Prediction Of Intellectual Deficits In Children With Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia, Paul Trautman, Candace Erickson, David Shaffer, Patricia O'Connor, Annaliese Sitarz, Antonio Correra, Irvin Sam Schonfeld

Publications and Research

Possible predictors of reported lower cognitive functioning in irradiated children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) were investigated. Thirty-four subjects, 5-14 years old, with ALL in continuous complete remission and without evidence of current or past central nervous system disease, were examined 9-110 months after diagnosis, using standard measures of intelligence and academic achievement. Subjects with a history of post-irradiation somnolence syndrome were significantly older at diagnosis than nonsomnolent subjects. Intelligence (IQ) was found to be unrelated to history of somnolence syndrome. IQ and achievement were unrelated to age at irradiation, irradiation-examination interval, and radiation dosages. The strongest predictor of IQ ...

A Biomechanical Analysis Of The Effect Wear Patterns Of Running Shoes Have On Kinematic Variables Of The Lower Extremities, Randall Apr 1988

A Biomechanical Analysis Of The Effect Wear Patterns Of Running Shoes Have On Kinematic Variables Of The Lower Extremities, Randall

Master's Theses

The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between wear patterns of running shoes and selected kinematic variables of the lower extremities. Statistical analyses were completed by using a case study design for two male subjects. Subjects were filmed for ten strides on six different sessions over a three-month period. A two-way ANOVA design, with repeated measures, evaluated the dependent variables: (a) footstrike, (b) midstance and (c) toeoff phases. The degree of change was determined by digitizing ten points on the body. A University of California, Los Angeles, BMDP2V statistical package was used to determine differences between means ...

Visually Displayed-Emg Biofeedback : Training Muscle Relaxation In Hearing Impaired Children :A Thesis ..., Cheryl Renee Bene

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to test the use of visually displayed EMG biofeedback as a means for training hearing impaired adolescents to reduce anterior temporalis or frontalis muscle tension . Five male and four female hearing impaired students between the ages of 13 and 15 were chosen from the California School for the Deaf, Fremont, CA to serve as participants. Each participant was randomly assigned to either an experimental or control condition. Participants in the experimental groups were given five 15 minute EMG biofeedback training sessions. An additional group of 4 adolescents with normal hearing from Marshall Junior ...

Dr. Margaret Wragg Sloss: A Biography, Polly Crisman

Iowa State University Veterinarian

Dr. Margaret Wragg Sloss was certainly the "queen" of the veterinary college, and it was a title she earned through many dedicated years of hard work and service. The many honors and awards she received speak for themselves, but Dr. Sloss was much more than her honors and awards would indicate. She was a bright, active, determined, always helpful woman who commanded the great respect and sincere admiration of those who knew her.

A Look Back At The Veterinary Student, Robert Norton Jan 1988

A Look Back At The Veterinary Student, Robert Norton

Iowa State University Veterinarian

Editors note: This was a wonderful letter to receive because it so nicely commented on the people and situations that produce a publication such as this. It made this staff feel good about not only where the ISU Veterinarian is going, but from whence it came.

Half a century may sound like a long time, but memories of the early days of The Veterinary Student (the original name of the Iowa State University Veterinarian) are as vivid as they are persistent. The staff was proud of this pioneering venture and flattered to be imitated by Student AVMA chapters over the ...

Editorial Notes

Iowa State University Veterinarian

Early last summer one of my fellow students suggested I include an editorial column in future issues of the ISU Veterinarian. My first inclination was to decline but the suggestion came up again which prompted me to ask exactly about what should I write? The response was, and rightly so, to write about something for which I have strong feelings. Although it may seem silly, I had to stop and think about those feelings.

Cognitive, Behavioral, And Adaptive Functioning In Fragile X And Non-Fragile X Retarded Men, E. Dykens, J. Leckman, Rhea Paul, M. Watson Jan 1988

Cognitive, Behavioral, And Adaptive Functioning In Fragile X And Non-Fragile X Retarded Men, E. Dykens, J. Leckman, Rhea Paul, M. Watson

Communication Disorders Faculty Publications

The cognitive, behavioral, and adaptive functioning of 12 men with fragile X syndrome (aged 23 to 62 years) was systematically assessed and compared to two matched groups of retarded men without fragile X syndrome residing at the same institution. The fragile X group was largely indistinguishable from the comparison groups on the cognitive, behavioral, and adaptive measures. Fragile X patients were, however, significantly more likely to have achieved levels of adaptive functioning commensurate with their intellectual abilities. Fragile X subjects who had similarly affected siblings emerged as significantly higher-functioning in all areas than Fragile X subjects who did not have ...
