Little is known about the nurse educator's experiences in remediating novice undergraduate nursing students who failed an exam early in the program of study. While numerous strategies have been used by faculty for remediation, no evidence-based methodology for student remediation has been identified in published literature. The aim of this study was to build a foundation of qualitative research on nurse educators' experiences in the remediation of a student who failed an exam. This basic qualitative study, guided by Smith and Liehr's story theory, explored the nurse educator's experiences with remediation using interview data collected from six nurse educators. Difficulty in evaluating underperforming nursing students in clinical settings is a problem for many nursing programs. The subjective nature of evaluations and faculty reluctance to provide negative evaluations have implications for subsequent patient care. A descriptive single case study research design was used to explore the experiences of clinical faculty evaluating underperforming nursing students in clinical settings at a U.S. Midwest community college. Evidence-based remediation options are limited for nursing students who fail their clinical competency evaluations. Scholarly literature provides a paucity of studies related to the use of simulation-based technology to remediate nursing students. The research question focused on the difference in the initial competency demonstration evaluation scores of associate degree nursing students compared to the reevaluation scores after remediation with simulation-based technology. In 2013, the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses' (NCLEX-RN) passing standard was increased, leading to a decrease in NCLEX-RN pass rates. The passing standard increase was prompted by an advisory panel's determination that a gap in safe, competent practice existed among new graduate nurses. New graduates' success on NCLEX-RN is critical to meet workplace demand for new nurses. Health care professionals and nurse educators are concerned about increasing percentage of first time test takers failing the NCLEX-RN exam. The purpose of this retrospective study was to examine predictive accuracy of the Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI) RN Comprehensive Predictor for passing or failing the NCLEX-RN exam in a cohort of nursing students (N = 195). South Eastern Technical College in South Carolina is in jeopardy of losing accreditation for their nursing program because of the low percentage of first time test takers failing.
