Student Physical Activity Patterns: Grade, Gender, And Activity Influences, Pamela Hodges Kulinna, Jeffrey J. Martin, Qin Lai, Amy Kliber, Brett Reed

Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies

The purpose of this study was to determine how physical education students' cardiovascular responses as determined by mean heart rate, standard deviation of heart rate, and percentage of time in target heart rate zone varied according to student characteristics. Participants were 505 students in Grades 3 through 12. The Polar Accurex Plus heart rate telemetry system was used to measure the physiological load on the cardiovascular system. Three-way ANOVA results suggested that heart rate patterns in physical education varied according to gender, grade, and activity. For example, secondary school girls were more active in individual activities while secondary school boys ...

A Course Every Department Can (Should?) Teach–Graduating Senior Survey, Ron Deiter Jun 2003

A Course Every Department Can (Should?) Teach–Graduating Senior Survey, Ron Deiter

Economics Publications

A Graduating Senior Survey course has been required of Agricultural Business majors at Iowa State University since 1997. Specific course goals include collecting valuable outcomes assessment information while, at the same time, assisting graduating seniors with various graduation issues. The format of this course is intended to facilitate the administration of an academic program rather than to disseminate specific, subject-matter knowledge. As such, experiences and observations from past offerings of this course should have widespread appeal and relevance.

The Development Of A Physical Education Teachers' Physical Activity Self-Efficacy Instrument, Jeffrey J. Martin, Pamela Hodges Kulinna Apr 2003

The Development Of A Physical Education Teachers' Physical Activity Self-Efficacy Instrument, Jeffrey J. Martin, Pamela Hodges Kulinna

Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies

In the present investigation a questionnaire was developed to assess physical education teachers' self-efficacy for teaching classes in which their students were engaged in high levels of physical activity (i.e., at least 50% of class time). Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses resulted in the development of a 16-item, 4-factor, multidimensional physical education teachers' physical activity self-efficacy scale (PETPAS) that produced reliable and valid scores. The Student factor reflected teachers' efficacy for managing students who didn't enjoy or value physical activity. The Time factor was indicative of teachers' efficacy when they didn't have enough time to teach. The ...

An Assessment Of Water Quality In Ensign Hollow, Clayton And Fayette Counties, In Northeast Iowa, Rick Klann, Jaime Platts

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Water quality and benthic invertebrates in the Ensign Hollow watershed, southwestern Clayton County and southeastern Fayette County, Iowa, were monitored from 2000 to 2001. Measurements of physical and chemical parameters of water quality, as well as analysis of benthic invertebrates, all indicated that streams of the Ensign Hollow watershed were exposed to slight organic pollution. Furthermore, the greatest threat to this watershed appeared to be sedimentation introduced through runoff.

Restoration And Monitoring Of The River Otter Population In Iowa, J. A. Pitt, W. R. Clark, R. D. Andrews, K. P. Schlarbaum, D. D. Hoffman, S. W. Pitt Jan 2003

Restoration And Monitoring Of The River Otter Population In Iowa, J. A. Pitt, W. R. Clark, R. D. Andrews, K. P. Schlarbaum, D. D. Hoffman, S. W. Pitt

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Northern river otters (Lontra canadensis) were widespread in North America at the time of European settlement. However, river otters were extirpated from most of Iowa in the early 1900s due to habitat degradation and unregulated harvest. In 1985, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources began an effort to restore the river otter population throughout the state, including a pilot study of survival to determine if establishment was feasible. Annual survival was estimated to be 86% during the pilot study. River otters dispersed an average of about 11 km from the point of release and exhibited habitat use typical for the ...
