Diagnosis Of Naturally Acquired Type-I And Type-Ii Diabetes Mellitus In Cats, Claudia Kirk, E Feldman, R Nelson Feb 1993

Diagnosis Of Naturally Acquired Type-I And Type-Ii Diabetes Mellitus In Cats, Claudia Kirk, E Feldman, R Nelson

Claudia A Kirk

After IV administration of 0.5 mg of glucagon/cat, glucose tolerance and insulin secretory response were evaluated in 10 lean cats, 10 obese cats, and 30 cats with diabetes mellitus. Blood samples for glucose and insulin determinations were collected immediately before and at 5, 10, 15, 30, 45, and 60 minutes after IV administration of glucagon. Baseline serum insulin concentration and insulin secretory response were used to classify diabetes mellitus in the 30 cats as type I or type II. Mean (+/- SEM) baseline and 30-minute serum glucose concentrations in obese cats were significantly (P < 0.05) decreased, compared with ...

A Khaldunian Perspective On The Dynamics Of Asiatic Societies, Syed Farid Alatas Jan 1993

A Khaldunian Perspective On The Dynamics Of Asiatic Societies, Syed Farid Alatas

farid alatas

During the last twenty years or so, scholars in the Third World began to become critical of what came to be known as the captive mind. The captive mind is uncritical and imitative in its approach to ideas and concepts from the West.' Discussions on the problem of mental captivity coincided with efforts to indigenous the social sciences in the post-war period when most of the Third World gained formal independence.

Functional Explanation And Metaphysical Individualism, Justin Schwartz Jan 1993

Functional Explanation And Metaphysical Individualism, Justin Schwartz

Justin Schwartz

A number of (present or former) analytical Marxists, such as Jon Elster, have argued that functional explanation has almost no place in the social sciences. (Although the discussion is framed in terms of a debate among analytical Marxists, the point is quite general, and Marxism is used for illustrative purposes.) Functional explanation accounts for what is to be explained by reference to its function; thus, sighted organism have eyes because eyes enable them to see. Elster and other critics of functional explanation argue that this pattern of explanation is inconsistent with "methodological individualism," the idea, as they understand it, that ...

Evaluation Of Passive Integrated Transponders As A Marking Technique For Turkey Poults, Dewaine H. Jackson, William H. Bunger Jan 1993

Evaluation Of Passive Integrated Transponders As A Marking Technique For Turkey Poults, Dewaine H. Jackson, William H. Bunger

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Injectable, passive integrated transponders (PITs) were evaluated as a marking technique for newly hatched wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo Linnaeus) poults. Seven of 12, 3-day-old domestic turkey poults received a PIT implant and a wing tag. A control group of five poults received only a wing tag. Two subcutaneous implant sites were evaluated, along the right side of the neck and in the area between the right inner thigh and breast. One of7 PITs failed or was expelled during the first week. Four scanning errors, in which the PIT was present yet not detected during the initial scanning attempt, occurred in ...

Mutant Weeds Of Iowa: V. S-Triazine Resistant Setaria Faberi Herrm, R. Thornhill, J. Dekker Jan 1993

Mutant Weeds Of Iowa: V. S-Triazine Resistant Setaria Faberi Herrm, R. Thornhill, J. Dekker

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

S-triazine resistance in giant foxtail (Setaria faberi Herrm.) has been reported previously, but not in the midwestern U.S. corn belt or Iowa. A study was conducted using a chlorophyll fluorescence assay to confirm the presence of resistance in one S. faberi population in Iowa. Variable chlorophyll fluorescence assays confirmed that a population of this species with this type of resistance exists in Iowa. This is the first report of s-triazine resistance in S. faberi, and the fourth species with this type of herbicide resistance, found in an Iowa agroecosystem.

Competitive Abilities Of Oat And Barley Varieties, B. D. Mcbratney, K. J. Frey Jan 1993

Competitive Abilities Of Oat And Barley Varieties, B. D. Mcbratney, K. J. Frey

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Competitive ability of a plant genotype reflects its capacity to yield well and compete successfully for light, moisture, and nutrients when grown with similar or dissimilar genotypes. This trait is important to plant breeding because most breeding populations are propagated in mixed or competitive stands. The objective of this study was to assess the competitive abilities of oat and barley genotypes.

Two sets of oat and barley genotypes were evaluated for competitive ability. Set I consisted of five oat varieties, and Set II consisted of two barley and three oat varieties. Neither set, when averaged, showed over- or under-compensation with ...

The Pleistocene Glacial Record At Two Quarries In Decatur County, Iowa, Keith E. Schilling, Robert A. Stewart Jan 1993

The Pleistocene Glacial Record At Two Quarries In Decatur County, Iowa, Keith E. Schilling, Robert A. Stewart

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The Pleistocene stratigraphy and sedimentology of two quarry exposures near Grand River and Decatur City in Decatur County, Iowa document a sequence of Pleistocene sediments overlying striated Pennsylvanian limestone which represent at least two pre-Illinoian glacial advances into the ancestral Grand River valley. Two pre-Illinoian diarnictons separated by a clast pavement were observed at the Decatur City quarry; a single diarnicton was present at the Grand River quarry. At both quarries, the diarnictons exhibit comparable lithologic properties and are genetically interpreted as basal tills. The pre-Illinoian tills are tentatively correlated with the Alburnett Formation in eastern Iowa, primarily on the ...

Community Dynamics Of Phytoplankton In A Typical Navigation Pool In The Upper Mississippi River, Theodore R. Lange, Ronald G. Rada Jan 1993

Community Dynamics Of Phytoplankton In A Typical Navigation Pool In The Upper Mississippi River, Theodore R. Lange, Ronald G. Rada

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

In 1986 we studied phytoplankton in the mid-reaches of Pool 8, which is a typical navigation pool of the Upper Mississippi River. During years of normal discharge, the areas studied usually become distinctly different from each other (ranging from free-flowing river to stagnant marsh) as the ice-free season progresses. These differences among sites did not occur during our study because the discharge into Pool 8 during 1986 was about 85% greater than the 10-yr mean discharge (1972-1982). Moreover, differences among areas were not observed with respect to physical and chemical characteristics such as photic zone depth, temperature, dissolved nitrogen and ...

G93-1139 Using The Dairy Herd Analyzer Program To Troubleshoot Management Problems, Jeffrey F. Keown, Rick J. Grant

Historical Materials from University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension

Here's a logical approach to solving your herd's reproductive, nutritional, genetic and milk quality problems using the Dairy Herd Analyzer program.

The Dairy Herd Analyzer program was developed at Kansas State University. The program uses information on the DHIA-202 form to aid a producer in identifying areas that need to be addressed to improve productivity and overall herd management. The analysis specifically targets four management areas: reproduction, milk quality, nutrition and genetics.

G93-1169 Coalitions For Building Community Understanding (Revised April 1994), Georgia L. Stevens Jan 1993

G93-1169 Coalitions For Building Community Understanding (Revised April 1994), Georgia L. Stevens

Historical Materials from University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension

This NebGuide identifies eight steps for coalitions involved in building community understanding and applies them to the issue of school-age child care.

The process of building community understanding is an important one, regardless of the area of concern. As more and more citizens recognize a particular problem, that problem moves from the private to the public domain and requires the involvement of a larger segment of the community. Though this NebGuide deals specifically with the example of school-age child care, the process of involving the whole community is relevant to any area of policy-making.

Historical Materials from University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension

This NebGuide describes seven of the most common insects that infest stored food products and provides prevention and control recommendations.

Finding insect-infested food products in the kitchen and pantry is relatively common in Nebraska. Dried food products that are often subject to insect infestations include: flour, cereals, cracked grains, cake mixes, crackers, powdered milk, macaroni, cured meats, dried fruits, nuts, popcorn, and spices. Other items such as pet foods, seed displays, ornamental corn, dried flower arrangements and ornaments made from plant parts may also become infested.
