The purpose of this synthesis was to identify on two common issues in Sports Officiating: Recruitment and Retention. An extensive examination of literature was conducted in order to review and research the problem in sports officiating of recruitment and retention. The purpose of this article is to identify researched recruitment and retention issues of sports officials, ways to retain current officials, and strategies to help recruit new officials. (Titlebaum, Haberlin, & Titlebaum 2009). This synthesis will review the literature on two common issues in Sports Officiating: Recruitment and Retention.

The purpose of this synthesis is to examine previous research on factors that affect sport officials’ intention to continue officiating. There is currently a shortage of sport officials across several sports worldwide, especially at the amateur level. The studies examined within the critical mass discovered common factors that positively and negatively affect sport official retention. Having a passion for the game, the social aspect of officiating and the perceived lack of organizational support were recurring themes that were cited as affecting sport officials’ intention to continue. This synthesis will highlight the impact of campus recreation programming on the recruitment and retention of college students. In order to study this matter to the fullest extent there were ten peer-reviewed articles examined that studied the campus recreation programming factors impacting the recruitment and retention of college students. Several factors that affected the recruitment and retention of college students included: Fitness and Wellness Needs, Campus Recreation Programming, Place Bonding, and Student Involvement and Integration.
