Abstract

Student athletes who perform at any collegiate level are required to balance the roles of being both a scholar and an athlete. The stress of a college student is magnified as student athletes must plan their schedule down to the minute of each day in order to keep up with the duties in each role. Many students at the college level, athletes or not, are hesitant to seek help because of the negative perception surrounding mental health. Sports officials often times hear verbal abuse that can cause them to second guess themselves because of the reactions they receive from spectators. If it is from fans, coaches or even players officials have a tremendous amount of pressure in order to get the call correct. This can lead to stress that could greatly impact the mental health of an official. The purpose of this synthesis was to review the literature on the impact of fan behavior on an official’s mental health.

There is research that concludes that there are benefits of physical activity for young children. However, there is an area of research which is lacking the benefits that physical activity and sport have on mental health and well-being in school-aged children, specifically. Therefore, the purpose of this synthesis was to review the literature on the benefits of physical activity and sport on mental health and well-being in school-aged children. Results determined that there are significant benefits, and a correlation between physical activity participation and overall mental health in school-aged children.

Mental health is a vital part of the success of student-athletes, but in a ten-year time frame, 477 athletes died from suicide (Velasco, 2017). The purpose of this synthesis was to determine which mental health issues are most prevalent among college athletes, how they handle them and what colleges and universities are doing to help.

The studies that were selected for this synthesis were found using the EBSCOHOST database. All literature had to be peer-reviewed to be considered, along with containing the key words mental health and collegiate/college athlete. There were a total of ten articles considered in the ...
