Previous laboratory studies have shown that the use of prequestions (questions deployed prior to a learning episode) improves students’ learning. The current study addressed whether these same effects would occur when using prequestions in a classroom setting. In a classroom study the effects of prequestions on immediate and on delayed retention were assessed where some students received questions before lecture (Prequestion Group) and other students did not (Control Group). The "Bridging the Gap" program provides an opportunity to explore the relationships between learning and power in international agricultural development partnerships. A USAID-funded partnership between Iowa State University and Volunteer Efforts for Development Concerns, this farmer-to-farmer program sent groups of Iowan women farmers to Uganda to teach Ugandan women farmers with the objectives that Ugandans would move from subsistence to commercial farming and that both groups would benefit from the cultural exchange. In the last decade, there has been an increase in legislation and funding that aims to get students in the United States interested in fields involving science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in order to keep the United States competitive with other countries in these important academic areas.
