Hiring And Recruitment As Rhetorical Strategies: An Analysis Of The Way Businesses Approach Graduating University Students And Influence Their Choices, Sean D. Gibson
Communication Studies
To answer the question, which rhetorical strategies are most persuasive to university graduates regarding hiring and recruitment, I surveyed three classrooms with a questionnaire that gauged university graduates attraction to three different types of rhetorical strategies. The rhetoric came from three major businesses that recruit university graduates: College Works Painting, Peace Corps, and Hewlett Packard.
Each one of these businesses uses a different type of strategy to recruit university graduates. College Works Painting uses an Experience Illusion strategy based on the premise that the company will help train university graduates to become managers and leaders in business. Peace Corps’ uses …

An experiential journey into personal growth and creative expression is, by nature, transformational. Undertaken in a public platform using social media (Twitter and blogging) it reveals powerful potential as a teaching and mentoring tool for inspiring creative action around the world. This project was designed to blend my joys and passions for tweeting positive inspiration and encouragement, sharing my readings and research related to creativity, exploring expressive art, activating creative potential with joy, collecting and sharing quotes, coaching positive change and creative action, and raising awareness of everyday creativity into a learning pathway which could be accessed by anyone using …

Immigration Through A Child's Eyes: A Study Of Italian And Eastern European Russian Immigrants At The Turn Of The 20th Century, Rachel Gelles, Ellie Klausner
Graduate Student Independent Studies
The activity guide, Turn of the 20th Century Immigrant Experience, which is designed for a social studies immigration unit, uses an interdisciplinary approach to teach students about immigrating to a new country. It connects to the lives and interests of our students as almost everyone originally immigrated to America from somewhere. In essence, some students immigrated themselves, while others have parents or grandparents who immigrated to the United States. This activity guide is also specifically designed to teach fourth grade students about immigration at the turn of the 20th century. The New York State Standards for fourth grade require that …

The purpose of this study is to investigate lexico-grammatical changes in the language of instruction in the Language Arts textbooks from four consecutive grades. The nature and rate of such changes are addressed within the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics. The study focuses on analyzing lexical density and variation, grammatical intricacy, process types, and clause complexes in the sample texts obtained from four elementary school textbooks for 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. The analysis shows that there are gradual changes in the lexico-grammatical features of the language of instruction across the grade levels; however, these gradual changes are not …

Past research has shown that learner-centered environments can improve students' self-esteem and increase their academic skills. Assessing The Impact Of Mandated Standards For Teaching On United States History Achievement Scores In Public Schools, Erick W. Nason
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The purpose of this study was to demonstrate how a well developed and validated national standard for United States history can affect public school achievement levels. Currently, there is no mandated national standard for United States history; rather it has been left to the respective states to create their own. This study focused on the state of Virginia, which has been able to meet both the nationally mandated adequate yearly progress (AYP) level, and achieve high proficiency levels in United States history achievement. This comparative case study examined two neighboring states of similar demographics: Virginia which made both the AYP …

Examining Students' Reflections On Literacy Activities Focused On Poetry Reading And Writing, Celeste Long
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Motivation, which is based on experience, is crucial in promoting literacy acquisition; however, little research has explored what children experience during literacy activities such as poetry reading and writing. This phenomenological study explored what elementary students experienced during literacy activities focused on poetry. Educational reform inspired by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 is based on a narrow range of quantitative research and does not consider the multifaceted nature of literacy and the experiences of the learner. Bruner's psychocultural theory and the belief that an individual's experiences are the core of existence were the philosophical and theoretical frameworks …
