A reforma educacional brasileira de 1870 do ministro Paulino de Souza procurou dar uma nova orientação aos estudos do Colégio Pedro II por enriquecer o “espirito” e desenvolver o intelecto do aluno através do ensino das Humanidades. Este trabalho relata a historia e analisa os conteúdos do programa de estudos do Colégio Pedro II, discutindo o numero e tipos de disciplinas no programa, seu sequenciamento nas series, e as cargas horarias atribuídas à elas. Em particular, examina a organização das disciplinas em “blocos de series”, seguidos por exames finais.

The purpose of this project was to develop and try out five communicative activities for Japanese students with intermediate English proficiency in ESL class settings to promote their English proficiency. After reviewing the literature concerning communicative language teaching, the author describes the development, pilot-testing and feedback of the communicative activities. Finally, suggestions concerning the tested activities are given.

Biological Olympiads are the sort of intellectual competition widely spread nowadays, especially among high school students. Olympiads, often an integral part of the curriculum, stimulate the pupils' interest in acquiring knowledge and help to evaluate the level of their knowledge. Biological Olympiads in this country differ greatly from the science Olympiad in the USA. First of all, they include only biological material and can be compared only with USA Science Olympiad events such as "A is for Anatomy," "Bio-Process Lab," "Designer Genes" or "Don't Bug Me." Infusing Global Education Into The Foreign Language Classroom: A Look At The Iowa Global Education Standard, Darcie J. Novotny

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

This study is designed to focus on the various aspects of infusing global education, as mandated by the Iowa Department of Education, into the high school foreign language classroom. Included in the study is an assessment of the approaches infusion of global education and a sample lesson plan meeting the guidelines as established by the mandate. A survey of 52 Iowa foreign language teachers was conducted to assess attitudes toward global education and to assess the implementation of global education. Further areas for research will also be discussed.

Consistent pleas have been made for using participative techniques/methods in adult, continuing, community or extension education conference designs and presentations which assure more stimulating and proactive learning experiences. Despite these pleas, conference audiences, often quite large in number, are typically "treated" to lectures, papers, stilted presentations, etc., and have little opportunity for participation in the proceedings of the conference sessions.
