The Effects Of Cross-Cultural Experience On Travel Participants, Elizabeth Sander Moreira

The principal hypothesis of this study is that within a group of travel participants, individuals' perceptions of the effects of the trip will differ, but at the same time there will be identifiable convergence of perception. The specific problem addressed is how the lives of Project Minnesota/Leon trip participants have been affected by visiting Nicaragua. The research methodology used was the speech communication theory of Symbolic Convergence and the data was examined by quantal analysis. Three distinct types of participants were found, supporting the validity of this theory and soundly defending the principal hypothesis. A corollary hypothesis is that cross-cultural …

Having come to the end of a ten-year study of Belize developing libraries, the Belize government asked for a survey of all the tertiary school libraries within the country. The government purpose centered around the number and caliber of staff, book/journal collections, student use and adequacy of the facility housing the collections. When adequacy of any of the above failed criteria, they asked for recommendations for improvement within the eleven schools visited. Thanks to the United States Information Agency’s Academic Specialist Award, the study, followed by training workshops, took place from February 3-6, 1990. Text of the entire study follows.

The information explosion in our technologically oriented society has brought with it a shortened time span of cultural and factual knowledge change in each succeeding decade. Thus, professionals being educated in graduate Adult Education/Human Resources Development programs as teachers and for other roles need a lifelong learning perspective to prevent their becoming obsolete. The model makes the important assumption that the quality of early life experiences of children can significantly affect their personality development. The three preconditioning components are the self-concept, the worldview, and values. The components of the conflict cycle are stress, feelings, behavior, and response. The model is applied in analyzing an example of a negative power struggle between a child care worker and a child. The model can be used to train staff members and children to better understand daily conflicts and the ways to avoid destructive conflict situations.
