Students bring 2-3 devices to class, 100% of 18-29 year olds own a cellphone and 94% own a smartphone (PEW Research Center, 2018), reflecting ubiquitous mobile device ownership among university-aged students across the U.S. Due to the surge of personal devices, campus infrastructure is increasing capacity to rapidly meet demands for wireless access, and instructors are using mobile learning to push classroom boundaries within and beyond the campus environment. This brief showcases innovative uses of mobile learning uncovered through a cross-campus study at four campuses. University orientations are typically passive events for students, with activities that include sitting and listening to speakers and perhaps talking to others seated nearby. In this project, the authors sought to provide a more active and collaborative component to a university orientation via a team-based game that incorporated content included in a typical orientation and modeled appropriate instructional technology use. This mobile orientation game used QR codes and videos to augment the physical environment of an academic building. Evaluating Language-Learning Mobile Apps For Second-Language Learners, Xiaojun Chen

As mobile technologies become more affordable and more advanced in function, researchers suggest that using mobile apps to assist English language learning are appropriate. This three-step evaluation study (designing a theory-driven rubric, selecting apps, and evaluating the apps) aims to investigate and evaluate the affordances of English language learning mobile apps for adult learners. The results of this evaluation study contribute to the literature of mobile learning targeting adult learners, and also broaden the knowledge body of integrating mobile learning into English Language Learning (ELL) classes.

A Case Study Of Mobile Learning Pilot Project In K-12 Schools, Chientzu Candace Chou, Lanise Block, Renee Jesness

Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)

This case study reports findings from a four-month pilot project of one-to-one learning with iPads in four 9th grade Geography classrooms in a large K-12 school district in the United States. The findings of the study revealed many promising opportunities and technical challenges for both teachers and students. The positive impact of iPad integration on student learning includes active engagement, increased time for projects, improved digital literacy, and digital citizenship. The challenge for student learning is mainly distraction by the multitude of irrelevant apps and Websites.
