Defining Authentic: The Relationship Between Native Art And Federal Indian Policy, 1879-1961, Aurora Kenworthy Feb 2019

Defining Authentic: The Relationship Between Native Art And Federal Indian Policy, 1879-1961, Aurora Kenworthy

Honors Theses, University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Between 1879 and 1961, non-Native perceptions of what constituted authentic Native art shifted. These changing perceptions were influenced by, and then in turn influenced, federal policy and legislation. While non-Native individuals and groups worked to improve conditions for Native communities and to protect “authentic” Native art forms, Native reformers also attempted to enact change to help Native communities and Native artists exercised control over their own art and identity.

1897 - The Franciscans In California, Zephyrin Engelhardt Feb 2019

1897 - The Franciscans In California, Zephyrin Engelhardt

Franciscan Publications

Engelhardt noted that much had bee written about those who first introduced Christianity and civilization in California but little was reliable due to ignorance, malice, exaggeration and misstatements. Up to 1785, Engelhardt consulted original Spanish documents and compared those with statements of H. H. Bancroft. According to the author, with regard to the missions from 1831 through 1850, Bancroft was almost the only authority offering any accurate information. He believed as to historic facts, that Bancroft's work was reliable and all the more valuable because it came from a non-Catholic source.

Morris High School: A Biography, Naomi Sharlin Feb 2019

Morris High School: A Biography, Naomi Sharlin

All Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Morris High School was conceived and built in the Bronx with a lofty mission: to provide a comprehensive, world-class secondary education to the children of immigrant and working-class families, and in so doing to elevate the American public education system and America itself. Such a weighty mission for an institution would result, one could expect, in painstaking record keeping, the lionization of great leaders, consistent investment in the building, and attention given to problems encountered or created over the years. And yet, the life of Morris High School remains elusive. Key figures in its story are lost to obscurity like ...

Preserving The Archives In The 21st Century Classroom: Designing History Classes Around Primary Source Research., Julie Harper Pace

Georgia Educational Researcher

This article details an experiment in an 11th and 12th grade 3-week intensive course, the Science and History of Contagious Disease. The course was an interdisciplinary survey of how diseases are spread along with an examination of social responses. Although both lecture and discussion based, the course revolved primary around a trip in which we led approximately 22 students through archival research in the City of Savannah Municipal Archives on the Yellow Fever epidemics of 1820, 1854, and 1876. The article describes the numerous advantages of archival work, from direct contact with rare and unique primary sources to ...

World War Ii And Its Impact On Education, Samuel J. Smith Dec 2018

World War Ii And Its Impact On Education, Samuel J. Smith

Samuel James Smith

A cost rarely considered in the study of war is its impact on education.  Government budgets shift funding from schools to armies.  Parents and teachers go off to war or modify their own activities to support the cause.  Older students prepare to fight while younger ones are evacuated or kept safe at home.  Educational experiences are certainly different for students in war-torn countries than for those in countries far from battle.  Nevertheless, war impacts education in a number of ways, and there are many examples of how World War II certainly did this.

Educational Reformer & Christian Soldier: General Oliver Otis Howard, Samuel J. Smith Dec 2018

Educational Reformer & Christian Soldier: General Oliver Otis Howard, Samuel J. Smith

Samuel James Smith

Contemporaries of Oliver Otis Howard and historians alike have disagreed on the degree of his success as a Civil War general and as commissioner of the Freedmen’s Bureau.  Some describe his performance as inept and others as skillful.  Some laud his Christian example while others believe that he allowed his religious and political beliefs to diminish his efforts.  Whatever one’s perspective, evidence indicates that Howard’s political and religious beliefs influenced his actions as Civil War general and as Freedmen’s Bureau commissioner, and—although he experienced some failure in both arenas—his leadership is exemplified by what ...

Lessons Of Resilience From Our Founding Mothers: An Examination Of Women From 1776 To 1830, Jody A. Kunk-Czaplicki Dec 2018

Lessons Of Resilience From Our Founding Mothers: An Examination Of Women From 1776 To 1830, Jody A. Kunk-Czaplicki

Journal of Research, Assessment, and Practice in Higher Education

The role of women in American society during its first 50 years (1776-1830) varied. Women, however, built and maintained the Republic but were not granted access to the Academy (Nash, 2005, Kerber, 1997). At the threshold of the Revolutionary War, women served not only their home, family, and husbands, they began to serve the broader country. In the first third of the 19th century, white women of wealth engaged in political acts of service and in acts of disruption (Kerber, 1997). The rest of this paper examines how women leaders of early America laid the foundation for women’s ...

Daniel Webster Presidential Campaign Broadside, Ernest M. Oleksy Dec 2018

Daniel Webster Presidential Campaign Broadside, Ernest M. Oleksy

The Downtown Review

A picture is worth a thousand words. When it comes to learning about history, a strong image can engage students in thinking about the way society operated better than reading a chapter out of a history book. This broadside is a creative design used not to imply that Daniel Webster had a presidential campaign flyer similar to it, but rather as an artistic re-imagining of what campaigning was like in 19th century U.S.A. This broadside serves two purposes. The first is as a creative expression and artistic venture. The second is as a rough approximation to traditional broadsides ...

Matters of history, philosophy, science, doctrine, and more pertaining to Kabbalah will be discussed in this article

An Exploratory Study Of Acculturation Experiences Of Graduate Student Immigrants At The University Of San Francisco, Courtney Lamar

Master's Theses

This study explores the shared challenges during the acculturation process of graduate student immigrants pursuing higher education in the United States. 13 graduate student immigrants at the University of San Francisco discuss their experiences of cultural adjustment into U.S. culture. Through qualitative interviews and thematic analysis, this study seeks to understand the acculturation experiences of graduate student immigrants in the San Francisco Bay Area of the United States. This analysis is based on the individual-level experience examining attitudes and acculturation strategies in the dominant society. Analysis, possibly policy implication for institutions of higher education, and possible directions for future ...
