American higher education has been in a state of transition and upheaval since the founding of Harvard College in 1636, which is generally credited with the beginning of higher education in America. Philanthropic support of American higher education has a long tradition and the largest portion of that philanthropy has historically been directed to private institutions. However, both public and private higher educational institutions are confronted with serious questions concerning their financial stability. These institutions are considering alternative sources of funds. Therefore, it is important to investigate and analyze methods of increasing philanthropy to American higher education.
