The 4 Connections: Moving From Intuitive To Intentional Relationship-Building To Improve Success And Reduce Equity Gaps, Suzanne Ames, Sally Heilstedt

Instructional Leadership Abstracts

Equitable student success can be achieved through connections and a sense of belonging created among faculty members and students. Lake Washington Institute of Technology, one of the 34 community and technical colleges in Washington State, implemented the 4 Connections framework based on best practices identified and systemically implemented at Odessa College. Through quantitative and qualitative research, Dr. Don Wood (now Odessa’s VP of Institutional Effectiveness), discovered that all faculty with high in-class retention rates shared “a common thread of connectivity with their students” (Kistner & Henderson, 2014). From this common thread emerged four key practices: 1. Learn and use students’ …

Journal of Catholic Education

Abstract

The preparation of effective, knowledgeable and caring educators whose mission is to serve society through direct contact with and instruction of students, is the topic of this action research. We sought to determine how we as a teacher preparation program within a dynamic Catholic university could ensure that our Catholic identity was truly evident and nurtured in our teacher candidates as they prepare to engage in the extremely important job of offering what is a universal right to an education to PK-12 students, in a variety of learning environments. The analysis of this teacher preparation program included a review …

What Is An Honors Student? A Noel-Levitz Survey, Donald Kaczvinsky Sep 2019

What Is An Honors Student? A Noel-Levitz Survey, Donald Kaczvinsky

Donald Kaczvinsky

In an impressive article published in the 2005 summer issue of JNCHC, Cheryl Achterberg laments the lack of empirical data available to provide a workable definition for honors students. While she duly notes that there is an “ideology” that honors students are “superior” to other students in an institution or of “high ability” or “the best and brightest,” she laments that “[t]here are few characteristics of honors students that can be standardized, measured, or uniformly compared across institutions” (Achterberg 75). She concludes her article with these considerations: honors students are “not a homogeneous group with a set of absolute or …

Cross-Cultural Considerations: Raising Language Teachers Awareness About The Importance Of Multiculturalism, Abir El Shaban

Journal of Research Initiatives

Abstract

With the worldwide use of English as a second language (ESL) and globalization, teachers are expected to understand, acknowledge and interact with culturally and linguistically diverse students and integrate their linguistic and multicultural backgrounds in classroom settings. Teachers need to be multicultural to be able to successfully impact their students to be multicultural. This paper provides English language teachers with valuable recommendations based on cross-cultural studies and my experience, as an ESL teacher, on how to be responsive to students from different cultures to empower and enhance their language proficiency skills.

Examining Feminist Consciousness In Lgbtq University Constituencies, John P. Cullen, Angela Clark-Taylor, Catherine Faurot, Alysha Alani, Catherine Cerulli

New York Journal of Student Affairs

There is little data on the perception of LGBTQ constituencies toward feminism. We conducted focus groups on our campus and within the surrounding community on perspectives of LGBTQ students, university-employed gay men, community-based transgender individuals, and community-based gay men toward feminism. We analyzed findings using Bem’s gender schema and Ridgeway’s construct of individual, interactional, and institutional aspects of gender identity. Our results show the majority of our LGBTQ focus groups held positive views toward feminism, associating it with equality for all genders and social justice, with the exception of community-based gay men, who negatively associated feminism solely with women’s rights.

The N150 Commission was divided into eight subcommittees, each charged with creating specific elements of the campus vision. The subcommittees were:

Bulletin of Gulistan State University

The following article discusses the indicators of growth and development, bio-ecological features of different ecoforms of Crocus sativus in the first year of vegetation. During the field experiments ecoforms of Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan and Holland were used. Bio-ecological features of plants were stadied by the method of I.V.Belolipov et al. [4], and biology of blooming - according to H.K.Karshibaev [5]. Obtained results show, that ecoforms of Uzbekistan, Holland and - in some stages of development - ecoform of Azerbaijan have higher growth temps and plant development.

Bulletin of Gulistan State University

In the territory of Uzbekistan 39 species of insects from 36 genera, 25 families and 10 orders were identified as inhabitants of dead trees and woodwork. The most harmful of them causing damages to wooden structures and inhabiting both natural and anthropogenic ecosystems are termites – Anacanthotermes turkestanicus and An. Ahngerianus. Xylophagous insects invade unbarked and unprotected wood, such as that in the wooden structures of private houses, objects of cultural and historical heritage, and administrative and social buildings. In Uzbekistan, there are two types of Anacanthotermes: Anacanthotermes turkestanicus Jacobs. and Anacanthotermes ahngerianus Jacobs. Most termites are found in the …

Hydrophilic Flora Of Different Water Bodies Of The Samarkand Region, Aktam Abdunazarovich Nurniyozov

Bulletin of Gulistan State University

Ponds, watercourses, wetlands called wetlands, are represented by a huge variety of habitat types; contain a significant part of the biodiversity of a given territory and many rare, relict and species requiring protection. The hydrophilic flora of water bodies in the Samarkand region is diverse and a unique flora was formed in each type of water body. This is due to the physical-geographical and soil-climatic nature of this reservoir. Monocotyledonous plants dominate in the composition of the hydrophilic flora of the region by the number of species. In various reservoirs of the Samarkand region, 72 species of aquatic and coastal …

Bulletin of Gulistan State University

In the study it was found that supramolecular complexes of glycyrrhizic acid (GA): phytohormones (PH): indole–3–acetic acid (IAA); indole–3–butane acid (IBA) and naphthalene–1–acetic acid (NAA) and kinetin) significantly increase the intensity and number of the absorbing dynamics of wheat variety "Dustlik" in the laboratory, optimize the production and energy of the grain in experimental salinity (NaCl=200 мМ). Particularly, it was recorded that during medium weight of wheat grain increased up to 47,5±3,5% in relation with the controled one after water absorption phase, hence it was also recorded that intensiveness of water absorption was in high level during the initial 16-72 …

One of the methods of applying contact, universally effective immunostimulants and other biologically active substances is the pre-sowing of seeds and suspension during plant growing. In this article, we propose that Zerox immunostimulants in the number of 3 seedlings (80-90; 100-110; 120-130 thousand seed / ha) in Bukhara-10 cotton varieties meet 5 standards (1-1,5-2-2,5-3l / t). and resistance to germination, root system development, germination and disease, using different periods, pre-sowing and plant growing (2–4 true leaves, shading and flowering). In condition of laboratory and field it was determined of contact and universial Zerox immunostimulator’s the best varieties is 2 l/t. …
