Understanding Performance Incentives In Postsecondary State Policy: The Case Of Louisiana, Lindsey Jakiel
Understanding Performance Incentives In Postsecondary State Policy: The Case Of Louisiana, Lindsey Jakiel
Lindsey B. Jakiel
This research examined postsecondary policy in Louisiana, which utilizes performance incentives, in order to: (a) provide clear distinctions among three commonly used types of performance incentives, and (b) use performance indicators defined in the LA GRAD Act to determine if Louisiana policy is primarily faculty oriented, state oriented, or client oriented. The author examined nuanced differences among three types of performance incentives: performance funding, performance budgeting, and performance reporting. As a case study, postsecondary performance policies in the state of Louisiana were situated in the performance incentive literature and analyzed using Burke and Associates' (2002) models of excellence. Categorical models …

The Frank J. Manning Certificate In Gerontology Alumni Survey: 21 Years Of Service To Elders, Nina M. Silverstein, Jenai Murtha, Donna Sullivan, May Jawad
Nina Silverstein
The Certificate Program in Gerontology at the University of Massachusetts Boston, a large urban university, was established in 1979 as part of an Administration on Aging (AoA) grant to develop and expand services to the elderly citizens of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In 1984, a line item was added to the state budget by the legislature and governor establishing the Gerontology Institute at the University of Massachusetts Boston and ensuring the continuation of training, research, and policy and advocacy work on behalf of and with Massachusetts’ elders (O’Brien, 1996). Upon Frank J. Manning’s death in 1986, the program was renamed …

Engaging Research As A Student Affairs Professional, Rishi R. Sriram
Engaging Research As A Student Affairs Professional, Rishi R. Sriram
Rishi Sriram, Ph.D.
Student affairs professionals are often referred to as scholar-practitioners. As demands upon professionals increase, however, it is all too easy for the “practitioner” part to completely overtake the “scholar.” If we find ourselves too busy even to read research, perhaps it is time to pause, re-establish our priorities, and reclaim the “scholar” in scholar-practitioner.
Teachers With Passion: Teaching In A Distressed Educational Environment, Professor Ben C Osisioma
Teachers With Passion: Teaching In A Distressed Educational Environment, Professor Ben C Osisioma
Prof Ben Chuka Osisioma
Passion is great enthusiasm, very strong emotion, a willingness to sacrifice. Men and women with passion outpace themselves as they go beyond mere talent, to leave their impact on society. Nigerian education needs teachers with passion – men and women with fire in their bones, impatient for lasting and enduring results. Such extra-ordinary pedagogues are people who will give themselves as ministers and missionaries in the temple of education.

Conceptualizations Of Spirituality, Religion, And Faith: Comparing Biblical Notions With The Perspectives Of Protestant Christian Students At A Lutheran College, Christy M. Craft, Alyssa B. Rockenbach
Conceptualizations Of Spirituality, Religion, And Faith: Comparing Biblical Notions With The Perspectives Of Protestant Christian Students At A Lutheran College, Christy M. Craft, Alyssa B. Rockenbach
Christy Moran Craft
As part of a larger investigation into the spiritual climate at one Lutheran college, we interviewed Protestant Christian students in order to compare their conceptualizations of spirituality, religion, and faith with biblical notions of those concepts. We found that the students' understandings of those concepts only loosely reflected general understanding within the higher education literature, and a significant disconnect existed between their conceptualizations of the relevant terms and those found in the Bible. In an effort to make meaning of our findings, we discuss existing literature about religious illiteracy as it relates to inherited faith and to the impact of …

Since the election of the first American college president in 1640—Henry Dunster of Harvard College—the position of president has been one of extreme responsibility and high visibility. There are many questions regarding how best to prepare individuals to attain this role (Chandler, 2006). Individuals come to the presidency from a variety of environments. Some come from corporations, some from governmental settings, and others come through traditional academic venues, having received doctoral degrees in an academic field of study. Recent data from the American Council of Education (2008) reported that over 40% of college and university presidents have earned a doctoral …

The Evolution Of College Health: A Story Of Education For Justice, Raymond Quirolgico
The Evolution Of College Health: A Story Of Education For Justice, Raymond Quirolgico
Raymond Quirolgico
Health has gained prominence in the public consciousness as a matter of security and equity. Therefore the need for the health promotion profession to orient itself in terms of social justice and not simply biomedical diagnostics is critical. This session will weave together a personal narrative of transitional journeys with original research about ACHA’s organizational evolution and cross-disciplinary theories and institutionally relevant practices to highlight the challenge of public health in this modern leadership context.

Alternative Approach To Assessing Military Training For Advanced Placement Into Engineering And Technology Programs, Kevin James Wainwright, Barbara Ellen Endicott-Popovsky, Sarah A. Rajala
Sarah A. Rajala
Both the United States and Canada invest a great deal of resources in the training of their military personal. Many of the skills and experiences accumulated by soldiers are those that are highly valued by civilian employers. Further, these skills are often embodied in academic programs, suggesting soldiers would have a comparative advantage in such programs; however, despite the efforts of government agencies, many soldiers are unable to convert their skills and training into meaningful careers. While there are several reasons why individuals leaving military duty have trouble re-integrating into work and education, one of the major obstacles is the …

Invisibly At Risk: Low-Income Students In A Middle And Upper-Class World, Jennifer O. Duffy
Jennifer O'Connor Duffy
Women's studies programs, multicultural centers, and organizations to support gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender students are campus fixtures. Few now question diversity's contribution to the education of all students. Jennifer Duffy suggests that it's time to acknowledge, support, and celebrate one more form of diversity that is mostly hidden: social class.

Student Activism And Curricular Change In Higher Education, Mikaila Arthur
Student Activism And Curricular Change In Higher Education, Mikaila Arthur
Mikaila Mariel Lemonik Arthur
While higher education is still far from universal in the United States, it plays an increasingly large role in shaping our collective understanding of what knowledge counts as legitimate and important. Therefore, understanding the college curriculum and how it is changed and shaped helps us to understand the overall dynamics of knowledge in contemporary society. This book considers the emergence of three curricular fields that have developed and spread over the past half century in American higher education - Women's studies, Asian American studies and Queer/LGBT studies. It details the broader history of their development as knowledge fields and then …
