The Church: A Salient Support System For African-American College Students, Odelet Nance Jan 2009

The Church: A Salient Support System For African-American College Students, Odelet Nance

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

This article builds on a previous qualitative study examining the role of religion in the lives of five African-American college students at a Predominately White Institution (PWI). Through a constructivist lens, the stories of first-year students revealed how their church informed their college experiences. This article describes how churches provided support for students through the theoretical frameworks illustrated by Alexander Astin, Jacqueline Mattis, and Robert Jagers. Churches and Predominately White Institutions are encouraged to form partnerships to strengthen and enhance support systems for African-American college students.

Research has shown that having an effective support system affects social and academic integration …

Student Affairs Reconsidered: A Look Back, A Response To Barry Loy, David M. Johnstone

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

On the tenth anniversary of David Guthrie’s Student Affairs: Reconsidered (SAR), Barry Loy wrote an article entitled: “Student Affairs Reconsidered: A Look Back.” He observed, after identifying a number of seminal works, that many in Christian Student Development have not really engaged or grappled with what it means to be an educator outside of the classroom. In letter format, I have chosen to interact with Barry in his observations with the hope that this is a conversation which is not ignored or forgotten by our colleagues. My purpose is not to disagree but continue the conversation which was started a …

The Moral Idea Of A University: A Case Study, Todd C. Ream, Perry L. Glanzer Jan 2009

The Moral Idea Of A University: A Case Study, Todd C. Ream, Perry L. Glanzer

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

A common moral idea is necessary for not only providing shape to a particular college or university community but also for the cultivation of the virtues amongst students. However, what are the characteristics of an institution that models this type of approach? In order to answer this question, this article describes what we believe is the best exemplar from our study of 156 different Christian colleges and universities. Such a determination was made based upon an analysis of documents (academic catalogs, admissions view books, and student handbooks) gathered from all 156 institutions and then site visits made to nine institutions …

Contributing Factors To Persistence Among African-American And Hispanic Students In Higher Education: A Phenomenological Qualitative Study At A Diverse Small Institution On The East Coast, W. Bernt King Jan 2009

Contributing Factors To Persistence Among African-American And Hispanic Students In Higher Education: A Phenomenological Qualitative Study At A Diverse Small Institution On The East Coast, W. Bernt King

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

The purpose for this phenomenological study is to understand the persistence of academically successful African-American and Hispanic students in an ethnically diverse higher education context where services and support targeting minority students do not formally exist. The research for this study has been conducted on campuses where the student body demographics are largely mono-ethnic. It would seem that as institutions of higher education become increasingly diverse, contributing factors to success for students of color may change. Themes that emerged include having a spiritual perspective, having a sense of purpose or the big picture, having support from family, having support from …

The First-Generation Student Journey: Dismantling Obstacles To Success, Gretchenrae Callanta, Adam J. Ortiz Jan 2009

The First-Generation Student Journey: Dismantling Obstacles To Success, Gretchenrae Callanta, Adam J. Ortiz

The Vermont Connection

This article addresses the importance for student affairs professionals to have proficient knowledge of the issues facing first-generation college students. A first-generation college student, the child of parents who never attended or completed college, often faces much adversity due to the lack of cultural capital, familial animosity, confusion about socioeconomic status, and a shortage of institutional support. In most cases, the identity of a first-generation college student is entirely invisible to others unless the individual makes other people aware—an oftentimes embarrassing disclosure. The Documenting Effective Education Practice (DEEP) project “examined the everyday workings of a variety of educationally effective colleges …

Writing As Disclosure Therapy: An Analysis Of Technique, Jesse Wingate

The Vermont Connection

In recent years, the mental health of students on college and university campuses has grown increasingly important to student affairs professionals and counselors. Unresolved mental health concerns such as stress, anxiety, and depression can develop into physical ailments, thus causing greater threat to students’ health and wellbeing on college campuses. Students often lack the ability to cope healthily to stressors and mental health ailments that subsequently affect their overall well-being. This article will address the benefits of writing as a form of disclosure, while briefly introducing ways that students assuage symptoms of stress, depression, and anxiety. Through the consideration of …

Elite Collegiate Athletics And The Academy: Criticisms, Bene Fi Ts, And The Role Of Student Affairs, Jackie Hyman, Mathew Van Jura

The Vermont Connection

College sports play a special role in higher education by promoting student unity on campus, maintaining connections with alumni, and enhancing the overall student experience. There are some who claim that college sports have lost touch with their origins and have been consumed by a “win at all costs” mentality. Murray Sperber (2000) has suggested that at many institutions, athletic programs are hindering the quality of undergraduate education. This article will explore the history of collegiate athletics and show how current sports programs play an integral role in supporting multiple facets of universities. Given the negative history, culture, and perception …

Lgbt Leadership Development: Uniting Lgbt And Leadership Scholarship To Determine Best Practices, Grant Hoover Jan 2009

Lgbt Leadership Development: Uniting Lgbt And Leadership Scholarship To Determine Best Practices, Grant Hoover

The Vermont Connection

Although a growing body of scholarship describes the developmental experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students and the popular subject of campus leadership continues to gain depth, there is little research telling us about the intersection of these two identities: the LGBT student leader. The existing research reveals that there is a variety of LGBT student leader types, each with their own set of values, preferred leadership contexts, and working styles. Using the current literature as a base-point for practice, I put forth a series of recommendations and best practices so that student affairs professionals can better engage …

Critical Race Theory And The Landscapes Of Higher Education, Frank Michael Muñoz Jan 2009

Critical Race Theory And The Landscapes Of Higher Education, Frank Michael Muñoz

The Vermont Connection

As a locus of mass acculturation, the American college campus is uniquely suited to impact the lives of millions of students each year. Drawing on the framework of critical race theory (CRT) and the professional practice of campus planning, this analysis suggests that campus buildings and landscapes have a role in maintaining and perpetuating American racism. Guided by CRT’s anti-racist and color-aware tenets, this analysis offers CRT as a lens through which campus planners and architects can (re)envision their work and roles on campus. Suggestions include strategies and tools for campus planners and educators.
