Looking For Leadership: The Search For A New Dean Continues, Bonnie Smith

On July 1, 2000, Dr. Richard Ross stepped down from his duties as dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine to fill his new role as dean of the College of Agriculture here at Iowa State University. Since October 1, Dr. Norman Cheville, formerly head of the Department of Veterinary Pathology, has been serving as interim dean of the college. Meanwhile, the university began its search for the right person to lead the College of Veterinary Medicine into the 21st century.

This thesis report presents results of a qualitative study conducted at Iowa State University. The purposes of the study were to investigate college student perceptions of leadership, and to identify beliefs that empower some students to be involved in leadership opportunities as well as beliefs that constrain some students from being engaged in leadership. A review of the literature was conducted concerning paradigms of leadership, how students perceive leadership, and what attempts are made to develop leadership. This study was conducted to research the background of the Student Support Services Program and its capability as a retention program at a predominantly White institution. The Student Support Services Program was originally funded under Title IV of the Higher Education Act (HEA) of 1965 as Special Services for Disadvantaged Students. The purpose of this qualitative study was to discover how outstanding community college presidents conceptualize their leadership practices and behaviors and what experiences they believe have prepared them for the presidency. It also sought to learn how their strategic constituencies evaluated the presidents. Purposeful sampling was used to select four community college presidents from a group of presidents identified as outstanding using a peer nomination process in a previous study by C. H. This study examines longitudinal funding for 513 public institutions over the time period 1995-1999 using the !PEDS database. A comparison across institutional types is presented, and student affairs funding also is compared with other major campus units.
