Dual Degree Program Guidebook, Student Affairs And Enrollment Management Sep 2019

Dual Degree Program Guidebook, Student Affairs And Enrollment Management

Student Affairs Reports

This Guidebook is designed to encourage unprecedented cooperation between four-year institutions and community colleges. The advice goes far beyond articulation to creating a culture of cooperation and inclusion.

From the time of widespread establishment of community colleges until now, clearing a pathway from the two-year college to baccalaureate graduation was assumed to be the sole responsibility of the community college. The university or liberal arts college served more as gatekeeper than facilitator. As a result, community college students, often the first in their families to pursue post-secondary education, were expected to navigate two complex bureaucracies with help only from the ...

Employer Reports Of Skills Gaps In The Workforce, Samantha K. Mosier, Samantha Kristine Kaiser Aug 2019

Employer Reports Of Skills Gaps In The Workforce, Samantha K. Mosier, Samantha Kristine Kaiser

Educational Administration: Theses, Dissertations, and Student Research

Skills gaps in the workforce are a common conversation in the current value proposition of higher education. Colleges are expected to help students prepare for a world-class workforce while maintaining the integrity of the academic mission. Employers have similar but different opinions on the preparation of college graduates. This exploratory study took an in-depth look at the perceptions of sixteen employers in a region of the Midwest on questions about the perception of hiring managers about the skills gap in the workforce. Questions focused on work readiness, common challenges, and opportunities that exist to combat these hiring challenges. The themes ...

Leading, Energizing, And Developing Staff Through Times Of Change, Carol A. Watson, June Liebert, Jane Sánchez, Austin Martin Williams

Presentations

The nature of library work is changing. New technology, user preferences, tighter budgets, and new expectations have meant that libraries have altered and adapted the way they provide resources and services. While these changes have brought many benefits to library users, innovations in how libraries provide resources and services often have long-term implications on the skills needed from librarians and staff. Now more than ever, it's important to communicate to staff about the future of their work and their roles in the library, and to provide them with the development and training they need to transition into new roles ...

Institutional Adoption And Implementation Of A Mandated Community College First Year Experience Course, Carmen Varney Purpus Jul 2019

Institutional Adoption And Implementation Of A Mandated Community College First Year Experience Course, Carmen Varney Purpus

Dissertations

This purpose of the research study is two-fold. The first aim is to establish strategies that can guide community colleges interested in the implementation of a mandated First Year Experience course as well as to identify barriers community colleges may encounter to help them move from desiring a mandated student success course to acting to create one. It is widely believed that student success course helps students learn to be successful, but it is not a widely accepted practice to mandate it for all students.

The second objective is to add to the limited body of research. A nonexperimental descriptive ...

The Impact Of Campus Facilities On The Recruitment Of Students In Higher Education, Lucinnda Sue Mcdonald

Dissertations

The statement often has been made over the years that university recruitment efforts are strongly impacted by campus facilities. The subject has been a topic of research over the past several decades. This study indicates that as generations change and times change, the significance of various aspects of the university to the prospective student change as well.

This research effort is a mixed-methods study to provide insight on the facilities current students deem most important when determining which college or university they will attend. The research for this study was conducted through an online survey asking students to:

Cultivating A Community Of Resilience For Transgender Collegians Through The Practice Of Sustainable Leadership, Beau Gilbert Jun 2019

Cultivating A Community Of Resilience For Transgender Collegians Through The Practice Of Sustainable Leadership, Beau Gilbert

Leadership for Sustainability Education Comprehensive Papers

Transgender students have always existed in communities of higher education yet are just now beginning to be acknowledged and included within the context of academia. This has primarily led to the development of campus resource centers intended to protect these students and provide safe spaces on campus. While this is a crucial support system for universities to provide, the framework described herein envisions a future where transgender students can practice resilience and feel a sense of belonging anywhere within their college community. Through a comprehensive review of the literature, this paper highlights the need for a sustainable and campus-wide approach ...

Latinidad In The College Union: Perspectives Of Latinx Staff Members, Naomi Rodriguez Jun 2019

Latinidad In The College Union: Perspectives Of Latinx Staff Members, Naomi Rodriguez

Educational Administration: Theses, Dissertations, and Student Research

Latinx students represent a consistently growing and significant population of college going students, though rates for successful graduation vary greatly (Nichols, 2017). Theories of student persistence indicate that student who are actively involved in their college campuses and develop a sense of sense of belonging are likelier to persist to graduation (Hurtado & Carter, 1997; Tinto, 1975). While research seeks to understand how Latinx navigate and succeed in post-secondary environments, barriers continue to pervade in their cumulative environments (Franklin, 2016; Friesen, 2018; Gloria, Delgado-Guerrero, Salazar, Nieves, Mejia & Martinez, 2016). College unions, as a functional part of the college environment, explain their purpose as a central point of community building and inclusion (Butts et al., 2012; Rullman & Harrington, 2014). However, empirical knowledge focused specifically on confirming college union environments as positive support systems for Latinx identities is relatively non-existent (Barrett, 2014; Smith, 2019).

Using a qualitative, narrative mode of inquiry (Clandinin & Connelly, 1990; Clandinin, 2013; Kim, 2016) framed ...

Reimagining First-Year Experience: Strategies For Supporting The Success Of The 21st Century Community College Student, Jennifer A. Puniello May 2019

Reimagining First-Year Experience: Strategies For Supporting The Success Of The 21st Century Community College Student, Jennifer A. Puniello

Instructional Design Capstones Collection

Across the nation, higher education institutions are assessing and redesigning their first-year experience as efforts to retain students. Community colleges, especially, are piloting and implementing evidence-based practices that have proven to be successful at four-year institutions. Bristol Community College, located in southeastern Massachusetts, is among one of these community colleges. While the research presented in this Capstone does not address non-cognitive issues, as critical as they are to understanding student attrition, this Capstone, backed by primary research and empirical data, focuses on curricular and co-curricular pedagogy imperative to the success of first-year community college students. Using Bristol as a subject ...
