The Zen Of Annual Meeting Attendance And Conferencing, Jeffrey D. Senese
The Zen Of Annual Meeting Attendance And Conferencing, Jeffrey D. Senese
Administration Publications and Research
I have attended and been involved in dozens of annual meetings and conferences across the United States over the past decade. My experiences at these events, I am certain, are likely to be very similar to those of most readers. At these conferences the basic format involves a large number of people coming together to presumably learn something new, to interact with colleagues, to network and meet new colleagues within the context of bringing what is learned back ones institution.

Where Next? A Study Of Work And Life Experiences Of Mature Students (Incl. Disadvantaged) In Three Higher Education Institutions, Aidan Kenny, Ted Fleming, Andrew Loxley, Fergal Finnegan
Other Resources
This study explores how graduates who entered college as mature students, and ‘disadvantaged’ mature students, view and value Higher Education after graduating with a primary degree. The study highlighted the limited usefulness of the concept of disadvantaged mature student and the findings of the research were not significantly different whether one was a mature student or a disadvantaged mature student. The rationale given by the state for supporting mature students in Higher Education (HE) is that it will yield economic and social benefits for both the students and society. As a consequence a wide range of access policies has been …

Defining Scholarship At Johnson And Wales University: A White Paper, Jeffrey D. Senese
Administration Publications and Research
This paper provides background discussion and information to begin the process of considering a more explicit definition of scholarship at the University in the coming decade and broadly discusses several of the issues that should be reviewed. The benefits to the University in creating a broad formal JWU definition of scholarship and encouraging faculty to engage appropriately in it both as they do at this time and to increase that focus as appropriate over the next decade. This could lead to increased faculty involvement in the various and multiple forms of learning, improved faculty satisfaction and retention, and an improved …

Minnesota Tuning Project: Biology And Graphic Design, Kristi L. Kremers, Krista M. Soria, Lynn D. Akey
Academic Affairs Publications
Within the tuning methodology, a key step is the utilization of a consultative survey. The objectives established in the Bologna process for the tuning survey “include gleaning current perspectives on the diversity of practice and commonality of knowledge across borders and traditions, and seeking a simple and accessible language to create a scaffolding on which the various degrees can work in comfort and trust” (Adelman, 2009, p. 49). The Minnesota tuning surveys sought the consultation of previous graduates, current students, employers of graduates, and academic faculty for each of the disciplines involved in tuning.

University Of Kentucky Adult Learning Focused Institution (Alfi) Task Force: Findings And Recommendations, Randolph Hollingsworth
Undergraduate Education White Papers
This report to Provost Kumble Subbaswamy details the wide-ranging work over two years of the UK Adult Learning Focused Institution (ALFI) Task Force. The findings in sum assert that the undergraduate population at the University is primarily of a traditional age and that little explicit attention is given to adult learners in UK's stated policies or procedures. The recommendations are that by becoming more "adult friendly" the University could also provide more flexibility and promise for success to all its students.

Democratic Engagement White Paper, John Saltmarsh, Matthew Hartley, Patti Clayton
Democratic Engagement White Paper, John Saltmarsh, Matthew Hartley, Patti Clayton
New England Resource Center for Higher Education Publications
Participants at a recent Wingspread conference on civic engagement in higher education concluded that while the movement has created some change, it has also plateaued and requires a more comprehensive effort to ensure lasting commitment and institutional capacity. For the participants at Wingspread, and for others involved in civic engagement in higher education, the time has come for “calling the question” of whether engagement will be viewed as a core value of the university of the 21st century – as centrally important to the civic mission of higher education and to generating and transmitting new knowledge. The concern is that …

The College Presidency: An Interview With Stephen J. Nelson, Stephen Nelson
Secondary Education and Professional Programs Faculty Publications
College presidents continue to fill prominent critical roles in colleges and universities and society. Thus an examination of the reasons for their success and failure is vital. Four major criteria are presented as a baseline for fair judgments of presidents and their leadership. Current trends in the presidency and presidential selection are explored and presented in order to increase understanding about how presidents can best "fit" the demands of these important leadership posts.

Collaboration, Commitment, And Communication: Tales From The Road Of Continuous Performance Improvement, M. Therese Antone, Rsm
Collaboration, Commitment, And Communication: Tales From The Road Of Continuous Performance Improvement, M. Therese Antone, Rsm
Faculty and Staff - Articles & Papers
Performance in higher education is strongly tied to accountability—accountability that goes beyond financial matters and includes assessment of academic achievement. The demands of accountability, both from the faculty and from the institution, are critical performance requirements for the higher education industry. In the past, institutional performance or success was very often measured by endowment, the number of student applications, the rate of matriculation from that application pool, and the graduation rate. Higher education has moved far beyond that for a real assessment of performance.
The Church Of The Nazarene: A Denomination And Its Colleges: A Mixed Methods Study, Mark A. Mountain
The Church Of The Nazarene: A Denomination And Its Colleges: A Mixed Methods Study, Mark A. Mountain
Scholarship – President's Office
The purpose for this study was to provide a framework for the Church of the Nazarene to examine the ongoing church-college relationship. At the Church of the Nazarene’s centennial, this study sought to examine the balance between institutional mission and academic philosophy on church-relatedness in the Church of the Nazarene’s higher education bodies within the United States.
The qualitative research brought to light several themes. The first was that the Church of the Nazarene is very unique its relationship between church and college. A second theme that was evident was the strong sense of institutional loyalty. And a third was …

The Institutional Challenges Of Full-Time Faculty Retirement: Has The Expedition Accomplished All That It Promised And That It Should Accomplish?, Jeffrey D. Senese
Administration Publications and Research
This paper provides a discussion of the issues and challenges that are presented in the recent literature concerning faculty retirement and the impacts this phenomenon has on colleges and universities as well as practical suggestions for administratively planning. Faculty retirement is an issue that has the potential for tremendous impact on institutions of higher education. In the coming decade there will likely be a generational shift in the faculty through retirements and rehiring and this will test many institutions in their efforts to maintain a strong core faculty strength in their curricula, research and service missions not to mention the …

Strategic Directions For Gettysburg College, June 2007, President's Office
Strategic Directions For Gettysburg College, June 2007, President's Office
Reports from the President’s Office
Gettysburg is a college deeply rooted in the American experience. It was born of democratic values, strong optimism, and the firm conviction that only a liberal arts education fully awakens and prepares people to live purposeful lives as citizen leaders. Our founders were champions of freedom and liberty, progressive thinkers, and staunch believers in the power of the liberal arts to prepare leaders to meet the challenges of our young nation.
Those beliefs were tested on the fields that surround our campus where a century and a half ago men gave their lives in a battle that defined our nation’s …

Brief 20: Graduate Education And Civic Engagement, Kerryann O’Meara
Brief 20: Graduate Education And Civic Engagement, Kerryann O’Meara
New England Resource Center for Higher Education Publications
Across the country, new attention is being paid to graduate education and civic engagement (Applegate, 2002; Bloomfield, 2006). For decades college campuses have worked diligently to connect undergraduate academic study with public service in order to enhance learning and meet community needs, a connection often referred to as service-learning or civic engagement. Given that over 1,000 institutions have joined Campus Compact, a national organization of college presidents and institutions committed to this work (www.campuscompact.org), the widespread success of the service-learning movement is undeniable. As a further testament, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching now has a classification focused …
