Enriching The Academic Community Through A Semesterlong Honors Symposium, Earl Brown Jr., Margaret C. Brown

Innovations in Undergraduate Research and Honors Education: Proceedings of the Second Schreyer National Conference 2001

This paper will focus on the theory and practice of a semester-long honors symposium on a current topic of significance to the academic and area community (e.g., the environment, service learning, ethics, the search for peace, cultural diversity). One purpose for such a symposium is to provide leadership opportunities for students to develop a topic, organize events (including time and place), find and contract speakers, create and distribute publicity both on and off campus, arrange for receptions and book signings, find students to introduce speakers, and create opportunities for students to present and share their research. A second purpose ...

Introduction: Unpacking The Research Encyclopedia, Josephine M. Carubia, Renata S. Engel

Innovations in Undergraduate Research and Honors Education: Proceedings of the Second Schreyer National Conference 2001

Ernest Boyer's work is the touchstone for most contemporary discussions about research and scholarship and is as pertinent to undergraduate research as to the professional research of faculty. This introduction will begin with Boyer so that his definitions and philosophies may inform additional discussions concerning the epistemologies, methodologies, and hierarchies embedded within the creative human pursuits we call research and scholarship. Boyer's work may be valued as much for the vocabulary it endows upon this conversation as for its impact on the values and purposes of higher education. His articulation of terminology for a range of creative pursuits ...

Interaction Online: Above And Beyond The Requirements Of Assessment, Meg O'Reilly, Diane Newton Jan 2001

Interaction Online: Above And Beyond The Requirements Of Assessment, Meg O'Reilly, Diane Newton

Centre for Teaching and Learning

Today’s literature is filled with new paradigms for learning, specifically in relation to the increasing adoption of computer-mediated techniques for interactive learning. In many cases, learning may now be enhanced through the experience of a shared online environment for critical discussion, knowledge building and the establishment of supportive social communities. Research data obtained from social science students at Southern Cross University over two semesters reveals students’ perceptions of the importance of online discussion whether these are assessable or not. This paper presents some findings and explores the impact of the emergence of a student-centred social learning environment.

Staff Development By Immersion In Interactive Learning Online, Meg O'Reilly, Jennifer M. Brown Jan 2001

Staff Development By Immersion In Interactive Learning Online, Meg O'Reilly, Jennifer M. Brown

Centre for Teaching and Learning

This is a story from an Australian perspective of the changes in staff development approaches over the past few years, in response to the rapidly changing educational and technological environments. In particular the authors reflect upon initiatives implemented and those planned for the future at Southern Cross University, as a result of the impact of staff development activities in our own institution and in other Australian universities to date. The paper concludes with a plan for the Teaching and Learning Centre’s website to move beyond delivery of information, exemplars and resources, to support a program of active immersion of ...

Navigating The Currents Of Change, Barbara Hill, Madeleine Green, Peter D. Eckel

GSE Publications

Colleges and universities are constantly undergoing change of some sort. Each new academic year brings computer software upgrades, fresh scheduling issues, new courses, and an influx of faculty and staff members.

But some institutional change is more ambitious, penetrating into the fabric of the institution. Many call this change "transformational"—meaning that it affects culture, structures, policies, attitudes, and behaviors.

Cooperative Education Partnerships : An Examination Of Reciprocal Relationships Between Universities And Tourism And Hospitality Industry Organisations In Providing Professional Development Education For Their Employees, Helen Breen

Theses

Cooperative educational partnerships in Australia are considered to be innovative ventures where universities join with industry in a working relationship, sharing resources to develop and provide professional development education for the industry employees. The distinguishing feature of a cooperative education partnership is that all partners contribute to the development, design and delivery of academic courses in the workplace. This research assesses the role and key aspects of professionalism developed by professional development education for industry employees. More specifically, the investigation examined the conditions that contribute to building mutually beneficial, reciprocal cooperative education partnerships between a university and its tourism and ...
