Higher Education And The Promise Of Opportunity, Robert L. Woodbury

New England Journal of Public Policy

The article portrays the passage of the Higher Education Act of 1965 as a watershed event, much like the Morrill Land Grant Act and the G.I. Bill, in the history of opening higher education to a broader range of citizens. What had once been a largely private enterprise for the elite became an increasingly public commitment to make a college and university education accessible to anyone qualified to take advantage of the opportunity. The study looked at the processes in the development of an alcohol responsibility program for post-secondary students in the service management major at the University of Tennessee: he program has been certified by the State of Tennessee to satisfy the Alcohol Beverage Commission requirement for server training related to the handling and service of alcoholic beverages. A managerial viewpoint was adopted so as to provide the greatest benefit to service management graduate.

Intellectual Humility And The Art Of Disagreement At The Christian College, James S. Spiegel

Education at a Christian college properly features both honest inquiry and unwavering allegiance to core theological standards, such as those embodied in the classical creeds. This combination of commitments can create tension for the Christian educator, as insistence upon doctrinal allegiance can inadvertently reinforce dogmatic attitudes so common among late adolescents. In this paper I discuss the virtue of intellectual humility and its importance for combating student dogmatism in an atmosphere of steadfast Christian commitment. After distinguishing between theological essentials and disputable matters, I discuss philosophical and theological grounds for being intellectually humble. And I illustrate ways in which faculty …

As an educational practice, service-learning offers an important means by which to work toward the integration of the curricular and co-curricular efforts on our respective campuses. However, the larger conceptual framework through which service-learning is defined and exercised is driven by what Augustine defines as the city of the world in a way that neglects the significance of what he referred to as the City of God. In this article, I identify the roots of this problem and offer an alternative conceptual framework for service-learning as a Christian educational practice. As schizophrenia may afflict a college student at any time, either before or after enrollment, do college student personnel have the knowledge and preparedness to deal with the disease? The advancement of antipsychotic drugs will inevitably mean that schizophrenic students will be able to function on college campuses in unprecedented numbers while living with the disease. This article will give a general overview of schizophrenia, perhaps one of the least understood mental health diseases, so that student affairs professionals are equipped to understand and offer support to students who develop or already have the disease.

Students and faculty alike would like to know what factors are related to success in college courses. The purpose of this study was to evaluate factors that relate to a student’s success in Animal Physiology I (Phys I), an upper-level animal science course at the University of Arkansas. Student data were confidentially collected and coded. Data collected were student high school grade point average (HSGPA); composite ACT score; English, reading, math, and science subscores on the ACT; and student grades in English composition I and II, college algebra, chemistry, biology, microbiology, animal physiology II, and reproductive physiology. In 2003, the election of Katherine Haley Will as Gettysburg College’s thirteenth president began a new era for women on campus. Will will be the first female president in the history of the college, and her election signifies the tremendous legal and psychological changes that have shaken both the college and the nation over the past quarter century. Federal legislation, the slowly-broadening vision of the school’s administration, and the proactive stance taken by women themselves have contributed to making Gettysburg College a place of seemingly strong gender equality.

Student Affairs Professionals: Path To The Presidency, Shane Mcgoey

The Vermont Connection

This study examined a sample of senior student affairs officers (n=22) who successfully attained the presidency at an institution of higher education. An analysis of participants’ vitae was used to examine three areas that seem historically vital for a successful college president: teaching/research, fundraising, and administrative experience. Results indicate that senior student affairs officers who have attained the college or university presidency possess strong backgrounds in two of the three areas identified above; specifically, senior student affairs officers’ experience in teaching/research and administration were strong. Conversely, experience in fundraising was lacking among many of the participants surveyed.

This paper explores the challenges of galvanizing substantive change within the academy. By focusing on the arrival of a new president and his strategic desire to institute an interdisciplinary honors college amidst a traditionally fractionalized campus, the authors explore the dynamics of change within the organizational structure of The University of Vermont.
