For 36 years, I have witnessed the evolution of the role of chair as economic, social and student climates emerge. My workshop will summarize the challenges that chairs must now face in 2023. The session will help relatively new and new chairs observe various scenarios and discuss how to problem solve them.

The application of affirmative action policies to university admissions is a topic of ongoing controversy. This article (ex)amines the debate through an interdisciplinary lens, drawing on the fields of history, law, and ethics. The first section provides historical background on affirmative action policies, tracing how they expanded from the employment sector into higher education. Next examined are legal challenges to affirmative action in admissions, with a focus on the pivotal 1978 Bakke case. The ethical implications of affirmative action are next considered, in particular the question of how affirmative action can be applied in a way that supports disenfranchised groups …

Over the last six months, the Isabelle Farrington College of Education has been adding new programs and improving existing ones. These include cross-endorsement in Comprehensive Special Education for certified teachers in Connecticut. We are also gearing up for an Ed.D. strand in Higher Education to begin fall 2015. Designed for working professionals, this program prepares them for careers in higher education administration, as well as for teaching roles within post-secondary and corporate environments. Higgins is SHU’s vice president for Mission and Catholic Identity. The year 1963 was a time of international tensions, major social and political turbulence, and the early years of the Second Vatican Council. Great changes were taking place around the world, inspiring Bishop Walter W. Curtis of Bridgeport to create a university in which laity would assume leadership.

Over the past three years, executives at General Electric (GE) have taught administrators at Sacred Heart University, located in Fairfield, CT, how to use the workout technique to identify and improve inefficient institutional processes and practices. This article will explain how Sacred Heart implemented the workout process, with a particular emphasis on factors contributing to successful workouts and the issues nonprofits encounter. GE has credited the workout with both improving processes and empowering the workforce. This chapter proposes a series of practical reforms, designed to work within the existing structure of higher education. The underlying assumption is that higher education in Connecticut is best served by allowing the natural forces of the market to determine the direction of growth and development.
