The intent of this study was to give a brief background and history of the theme and variations in early periods of music history, as well as to analyze more specifically and compare in some depth the use of the form by four composers of later periods, in a keyboard work of each. Each of the following composers represents a different period of music history: (1) Handel, late Baroque; (2) Mozart, Classic; (3) Beethoven, early Romantic; and (4) Norman Dello Joio, Modern. The purpose of this study is to design a setting for the play “Juno And The Paycock”, by Sean O'Casey. It will be done in such a manner as to be (1.) aesthetically satisfactory, (2.) appropriate to the play, its historical period, and social conditions of the characters, (3.) aligned with the demands of stage presentation, in that it provides the necessary space for stage movements, and traffic, (4.) practical for construction within the limits imposed by the stage of McConnell Auditorium.

Before any proper study may be made of Swift's attitude toward women, as exemplified in his life and as expressed in his writings, it would seem advisable to review briefly woman's place in society during the period of Swift's mature life. Certainly no just conclusions could be reached regarding the problem of Swift and women unless the study were predicated on an awareness of the position of women in the economic, educational and social life of, roughly, the first half of the eighteenth century.

The purpose of this study is to examine as thoroughly as possible, with the sources at hand, the song cycle, "On Wenlock Edge," by Ralph Vaughan Williams. The study will include a brief summary of the life of Vaughan Williams, pertinent statements about his music, a general analysis of the entire composition and a detailed analysis of two songs from the cycle. The two songs receiving more detailed analysis were chosen for their contrast and variety of musical ideas.

The purposes of this study were four: (1) to measure the writing abilities in a group of subjects; (2) to measure the willingness of those subjects to accept certain sentence-like utterances as grammatical--their grammatical judgments; (3) to determine whether the subjects' acceptance of those utterances will occur in a range of scores; and (4) to correlate the subjects' scores on the two factors to determine the extent to which they are related.
