The Extent Of Drug Use Among High School Seniors In Tennessee, April 1985, Gary P. Martin Dec 1986

The Extent Of Drug Use Among High School Seniors In Tennessee, April 1985, Gary P. Martin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to obtain information relative to the extent of drug use by high school seniors in Tennessee. Patterns of drug use were obtained by using a questionnaire/opinionnaire developed by Bachman, Johnston, and O'Malley of the Institute for Social Research, Ann Arbor, Michigan. The review of literature focused on patterns of drug use by seniors throughout the nation using the same questionnaire/opinionnaire. The results of the national survey were compared with the findings in Tennessee. The questionnaire was administered to a stratified random sample of 450 seniors in 15 randomly selected high schools in West, Middle, …

A Biomechanical Analysis Of Running Variances Due To Physiological Fatigue Among Highly Skilled Female Distance Runners, Alison B. Stanford Aug 1986

A Biomechanical Analysis Of Running Variances Due To Physiological Fatigue Among Highly Skilled Female Distance Runners, Alison B. Stanford

Masters Theses

The problem of the study was to investigate the effect of physiological fatigue upon mechanical alterations in running. The investigation involved a biomedical analysis of kinematic parameters which compared running mechanics of subjects both fresh and fatigued.

The study revealed numerous alterations in running mechanics associated with fatigue. Maximum vertical displacement of the body's center of gravity was found during the toe-off phase and was significantly less during fatigue. Stride lengths were found to be as much as 2.72 feet shorter during fatigue and stride times as great as .42 seconds shorter. Extension of the support leg was less and …

Relationship Of Admission Variables To Success For Licensed Practical Nurses In Associate Degree In Nursing Ladder Program, Sally Kathryn Johnson Aug 1986

Relationship Of Admission Variables To Success For Licensed Practical Nurses In Associate Degree In Nursing Ladder Program, Sally Kathryn Johnson

Dissertations

The problem and challenge for nurse educators in Practical Nursing/Associate Degree Nursing (PN/ADN) ladder programs is to identify admission criteria for Licensed Practical Nurse (PN) applicants entering the advanced standing level. The selected admission criteria should include those which are most likely to indicate success in the program and on the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nursing (NCLEX-RN). Identifying such criteria would promote the most efficient use of scarce educational resources and help avoid loss of time, energy and financial resources for potential nursing students.

The records of 79 LPNs who entered a PN/ADN ladder program at the advanced …

Effects Of Internal Imagery & Experimental State On The Performance Of Intercollegiate Smallbore Rifle Shooters, Paul Whitworth May 1986

Effects Of Internal Imagery & Experimental State On The Performance Of Intercollegiate Smallbore Rifle Shooters, Paul Whitworth

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study was conducted to examine the effects of internal imagery and experiential state on the performance of intercollegiate smallbore rifle shooters. An interaction between internal imagery and experiential state was hypothesized. Subjects included 43 smallbore rifle shooters from 7 universities stratified into 2 groups. Group 1, composed of 23 shooters, received internal imagery instructions and practice time; group 2 received unrelated instructions and an equal amount of practice time. Following the instructional period, a posttest was administered to each group (the NRA/ISU Style 1/2 course on an indoor 50 foot range) and each shooter completed an experiential state measure. …

Menstrual Cycle Status, Body Composition And Dietary Characteristics Of Female Collegiate Gymnasts, Dance-Majors And Non-Athletes, Robyn Lesley Mills Apr 1986

Menstrual Cycle Status, Body Composition And Dietary Characteristics Of Female Collegiate Gymnasts, Dance-Majors And Non-Athletes, Robyn Lesley Mills

Masters Theses

This study investigated the incidence of regular menstrual cycles, secondary amenorrhea and oligomenorrhea in collegiate female gymnasts, dance-majors and non-athletes. Menstrual cycle characteristics and eating attitudes were surveyed by questionnaire. Dietary status was determined by a 5 day dietary diary, and body composition was measured by hydrostatic weighing to determine the relationship of these variables with menstrual cycle status.

The frequency of amenorrhea, oligomenorrhea and regular cycles differed significantly (p<.05) between activity groups. The gymnasts reported the highest incidence of amenorrhea (16%) and oligomenorrhea (32%). A significant difference (p<.05) was found between activity groups for age at menarche, percent body fat, dietary status and eating attitudes.

Statistical analysis of the main effect of menstrual cycle status showed a significant difference for caloric intake and eating attitudes. The amenorrheic subjects consumed fewer calories and scored higher on …

Analysis Of Some Variations In Method Of Performing The Push-Up Among College Women, Clifford T. Mito Jan 1986

Analysis Of Some Variations In Method Of Performing The Push-Up Among College Women, Clifford T. Mito

All Master's Theses

This study utilized 90 college women from Central Washington University to determine if there are significant differences in strength scores between Rowney Knees-on Push-up Method and three body position variations and cadences. The main outcome of this research reflected two significant differences between Rowney's method and body position and cadences. No significant differences were found between experimental body position variations and cadences. The results of this study confirm the hypothesis that changes in push-up technique may produce significant differences in strength scores.

A Measure Of Student Attitude Toward Physical Activity At Central Washington University, Timothy D. Clark Jan 1986

A Measure Of Student Attitude Toward Physical Activity At Central Washington University, Timothy D. Clark

All Master's Theses

The attitudes of students who were involved in service courses offered by the Physical Education Department of Central Washington University during the Winter Quarter of 1984 were given G. S. Kenyon's Attitude Toward Physical Activity inventory. The results showed that attitudes for male and female tested were similar within the six domains of the inventory, even though a wide variation of response was obtained in the individual domains by each sex group.

The Relationship Of Exercise And Diet To Total Cholesterol And High Density Lipoprotein-Cholesterol College Age Males And Females, William F. Rothschild Jan 1986

The Relationship Of Exercise And Diet To Total Cholesterol And High Density Lipoprotein-Cholesterol College Age Males And Females, William F. Rothschild

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Atherosclerosis is a disease of the arteries and is defined as a form of arteriosclerosis in which fatty lesions called atheromatous plaques form on the intima of arteries. The formation of these plaques begins early, within the first two decades of life, and may be started by damage to the endothelial cells and intima of the artery walls (Guyton, 1981). A number of factors may cause the initial damage, including physical abrasion of the endothelium, abnormal substances in the blood or pulsating arterial pressure on the vessel wall (Guyton, 1981).

There is a growing body of epidemiologic, genetic, experimental, and …
