A Comparison Of The Cardiorespiratory Responses Of Prepubescent Boys And Adult Men To Similar Exercise Programs, Mary Marlene Petratis
A Comparison Of The Cardiorespiratory Responses Of Prepubescent Boys And Adult Men To Similar Exercise Programs, Mary Marlene Petratis
Student Work
The cardiorespiratory effects of exercise training in adults have been widely researched (26,39,53,56,57). Through training, the adult experiences an increase in maximum aerobic power (V 02 max), a decrease in resting and submaximum heart rate and an increase in maximum cardiac output (26,36,53,54,59,60). These physiological changes result in an increase in physical working capacity and an enhanced tolerance to all exercise workloads.
Factors contributing to the training effect in the adult include the intensity, the duration, and the frequency of exercise (1, 2). The recommended type of exercise involves activities which use large muscle groups of the body in a …

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Two Different Respiratory Valves On Maximal Oxygen Uptake And Heart Rate Response Of Selected Distance Runners, Jeffry Phillip Morgan
A Comparison Of The Effects Of Two Different Respiratory Valves On Maximal Oxygen Uptake And Heart Rate Response Of Selected Distance Runners, Jeffry Phillip Morgan
Masters Theses
This study compared selected cardiorespiratory responses obtained from two different respiratory valves, the Modified Otis-McKerrow and the Speak Easy, a mask-type valve, during maximal graded exercise testing of eleven distance runners. The results indicated that both maximal oxygen uptake and minute ventilation were significantly different. Values for maximal VO2 and VE were lower with the Speak Easy by 24 and 19 percent, respectively. Further analysis revealed that those differences were significant at submaximal levels as well. The trends in those responses show that the differences increase with increasing workload. However, maximal and submaximal heart rates were not significantly …

Strategies In Reading Comprehension To Enhance The Reading Of A Ninth Grade Standard First Aid And Personal Safety Text, James L. Bogert
Strategies In Reading Comprehension To Enhance The Reading Of A Ninth Grade Standard First Aid And Personal Safety Text, James L. Bogert
All Graduate Projects
A series of 28 reading comprehension strategies was developed to assist students in using and understanding the first aid textbook in a ninth grade Standard First Aid and Personal Safety class. The strategies included lessons at the literal, interpretive, and applied levels of reading comprehension and were developed to further facilitate students' reading the text with more depth and proficiency.
The Physiological And Physical Effects Of A Seven Week Summer Wrestling Camp On Experienced Prepubescent Wrestlers, Wade Hoyt Thomson
The Physiological And Physical Effects Of A Seven Week Summer Wrestling Camp On Experienced Prepubescent Wrestlers, Wade Hoyt Thomson
Student Work
Participation by children in competitive sports programs has increased considerably within the past 20 years, in part because of the increased number of competitive sports programs available for children (59). Furthermore, children are becoming increasingly involved at younger ages (48). Frequently, these programs are very physical, and actively competitive with little consideration given to how the children may respond or adapt to the strenuous exercise. It is tacitly assumed that children sports participants will experience the same physiological and physical benefits as would adult participants .

An Analysis Of A Sample Of Parents And University Freshmen In Regard To Their Attitudes Toward The Needs Of Sex Education In Community Schools, Linda C. Aleksa
Community & Environmental Health Theses & Dissertations
This study attempted to investigate a sample of both parents' and college freshmens' attitudes toward sex education, and the content and timing of sex education in the Tidewater schools. Two Likert-type scales each containing ten statements were administered in order to survey attitudes. A statistically significant difference was found in scores on the attitude toward content and timing of sex education scale between parents and college freshmen. Parents demonstrated a more favorable attitude toward sex education as an integral component of the overall educational curriculum. The majority of parents indicated support for including important aspects such as reproduction and indicated …
The Effect Of Physical Fitness Training On Academic Performance, Annette M. Butler
The Effect Of Physical Fitness Training On Academic Performance, Annette M. Butler
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
In elderly psychiatric individuals, physical fitness training has been related to improved cognitive performance on several scales (Powell, 1974; Stamford, Hambacher, & Fallica, 1974). The results with normal adults and children, however, are not clear (Folkins & Sime, 1981). The purpose of the present study was to test the effects of cardiovascular fitness traini~g on cognitive functioning, relevant to academic performance, in college students. The following measures were used: Shipley- Institute of Living Scale, Rotter's Internal-External Control of Reinforcement Scale, a Student Learning Styles / Questionnaire, self~report data indicating hours spent studying, quality of studies, and mental alertness during daily …
A Systems Based Stress Reduction Psychological Education Program For Emergency Veterinary Personnel: Development And Evaluation, Dorsey Thomas Wessells Jr.
A Systems Based Stress Reduction Psychological Education Program For Emergency Veterinary Personnel: Development And Evaluation, Dorsey Thomas Wessells Jr.
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Conventional veterinary training equips veterinarians with skills to treat medical problems with animals. Until recently little emphasis has been placed on the human aspects of veterinary training and treatment. With the identification of the Human/Companion Animal Bond as a distinct area of scientific investigation, an increased awareness in this human factor in veterinary work has begun to emerge. To address the human factor, this study set out to evaluate the effectiveness of a training program developed to equip veterinarians with intervention skills and knowledge of family emotional process.;One, if not the most stressful, aspects of veterinary work reported by clinicians …
