McLuhan's Warning, Frye's Strategy, Emerson's Dream argues the vital function of literary writing in the academy. The essay maps a road from the warnings of catastrophe by Marshall McLuhan to Emerson's dream of all American citizens being poets through the writing strategies of Northrop Frye. It is argued that what one learns through literary writing is especially important during the crises that are ongoing in the West.

This paper describes how one research team uses a variety of qualitative, cultural anthropological research techniques and qualitative survey research techniques to better understand the characteristics of young people who drink and do not drink alcohol. The team used qualitative methods of cultural anthropology for initial small-group studies of three mental constructs known to predict behaviors. These mental constructs are: what young people expect to happen when they drink alcohol (alcohol expectancies), how they view Chinese and Western cultural values (cultural orientation), and how confident they are in believing they can manage pressures to drink alcohol (self-efficacy). The Nebraska Internship Consortium in Professional Psychology (NICPP) is a group of outpatient, inpatient, and school agencies in both rural and urban settings in southeastern Nebraska. The mission of NICPP is to provide an integrated, individually tailored and coordinated series of learning experiences that provide interns with opportunities to (a) practice and expand on previously held knowledge and learned skills; (b) develop new skills and knowledge; and (c) experience professional growth and development, thus contributing to the emergence of a larger pool of competent psychologists trained in the scientist- practitioner tradition.

Participatory Prototyping: Improving Faculty Participation In Technology-Mediated Instruction, Jason K. Mcdonald

This paper reports the results of a trial to help university faculty members better participate in the devel- opment of technology-mediated instruction, as well as to develop methods for faculty to create their own media that maintains an acceptable level of instructional quality. Using low-cost technology development tools and software templates, faculty members produced a technology-mediated lesson for a university statistics course. While the quality of their attempt was not acceptable to help facilitate student learning, this trial ultimately acted as a prototype of different instructional strategies for the course, which later were produced using higher-quality media. Relationship Between Parental Physical Discipline And Child Externalizing Problems In The Caribbean Subculture In New York City, Meltem Paker

This study investigated the relationship between parental physical discipline (PD) and child externalizing behaviors (EB) in the Caribbean subculture and examined whether acculturation to the European American and Caribbean cultures, generational status, normativity of PD, and warmth in the parent-child relationship moderated this relationship. Eighty-nine parents of Caribbean origin answered an anonymous survey consisting of various scales and demographic questions.

Descriptive analyses indicated that parents in this study used PD an average of 10 times during the past year. The majority (69%) reported using at least one PD act in the past year. All forms of more severe PD (e.g., …

Too often higher education officials equate successful enrollment management with determining the appropriate financial-aid package, assuming the student matriculates. However, there are competing theories as to why a student may be attracted to a particular college. Could it be the "buzz"? This study examines the relationship between buzz and bucks with respect to enrollment objectives. Research findings indicate that it is not an either-or proposition. Moreover, marketers are presented with an ethical responsibility to safeguard the public.

In an increasing multicultural classroom a Confucian-Socratic framework is used to highlight fundamental differences in learning approaches between Eastern and Western cultures. However, educators must also be aware of inherent similarities if best practices are to be gleaned and implemented with ingenuity in the classroom. Therefore, innovations and insights into the qualitative-quantitative continum of contemporary research are offered as an analogue to help build a hybrid model of global instruction. A new Mobius Model of Global Instruction is introduced that emphasizes a multicultural perspective
