Assessing student learning across a library instruction program can be infeasible without being strategic, intentional, and realistic. Librarians at a small college will share how they developed a sustainable, 3-year assessment plan for the ACRL Framework and targeted a 100-level biology course-one of the two high-enrollment STEM courses that receive library instruction on their campus each year. The presenters will share their assessment plan, flipped instruction model, workflow-management strategies, and lessons learned for collaborating with STEM faculty to assess information literacy.

This presentation describes the process used to develop and implement an information literacy curriculum for graduate programs at Emory & Henry College. When the library director was hired, she noted that students were graduating without having contact with the library and without building necessary information literacy skills. She began searching the literature for solutions and approaches. She synthesized the literature and, after identifying barriers, created a plan. Her team of librarians began by developing a curriculum map for information literacy skills at the undergraduate level. This poster will show how a large university developed an on-demand library readiness mini-course online that has recently become a requirement for all undergraduate orientation classes, both in-person and online. Furthermore, the online mini-course has been adopted by numerous faculty in research-based courses across varied subject areas throughout the University. Approximately 75% of honors programs have thesis or capstone requirements (Savage & Cognard-Black, 2016). Seeing the need to provide structure, scaffolding and guidance for these undergraduates, librarians created a course, Introduction to the Honors Thesis, as a required course for 2^nd semester Juniors in the Honors Program. In the course the frames of “Searching as Strategic Exploration” and “Information Creation as a Process” are taught. Students then demonstrate these frames through writing reflection papers, “source annotation” papers, and writing a prospectus. This case study was designed to evaluate faculty perceptions of teaching information literacy within the general education curriculum, the level of collaboration between faculty and library staff, and challenges regarding instruction of information literacy at a community college in Missouri. Using an adapted survey from a 2014 study by Dr. Sharon Weiner of Purdue University, faculty were asked to provide their current views regarding instruction of information literacy at the Missouri institution. Additionally, archival data provided by the institution were analyzed using triangulation to establish a baseline regarding the best path forward to improving instruction, assessment, and student learning. Evaluation of library instruction (LI) at the University of St. Augustine found that students did well on assignments tied to LI and were more likely to participate in LI when it was required. Incorporating data points into the library’s overall assessment and strategic plan allowed for ongoing assessment of LI.

This article introduces the American Association of Colleges and University’s (AAC& U) Value Rubrics to smaller colleges and describes how the Value Rubrics (2009) offered free to download from the AAC&U website may be used as effective assessment tools in academic and information literacy courses and programs on their campuses. This article also describe why and how a small Kansas college has proceeded to use the AAC&U Value Rubrics alongside the SAILS pre- and post-test to assess a for-credit information literacy course offered to undergraduate students.

When an education professor and a reference librarian sought to improve the quality of undergraduate student research, their partnership led to a new focus on assessing the research process in addition to the product. In this study, we reflect on our collaborative experience introducing information literacy as the foundation for undergraduate teacher education research. We examine the outcomes of this collaboration, focusing on the assessment of the process. Using a mixed methods approach, we found that direct instruction supporting effective research strategies positively impacted student projects. During 2012 the Liaison Librarians at Grand Valley State University undertook a new initiative to develop “instruction plans” for each of our liaison departments. This session will report on an ethnographic study of an English composition class. The researcher observed the class for an entire semester and conducted focus groups and interviews with students and the instructor. The session will describe key activities from the class, including reflections on motivation and learning by both instructors and students. It will conclude with a discussion of how the research findings can help librarians design instruction that engages learners more deeply.

At the same time, international emphasis on the importance of Information Literacy has found reflections locally in many calls for the development of school libraries (e.g. Arnold, 2002: 178), but has remained a problem in the actual implementation. A Measure Of The Library Skills Of High School Graduates Of Washington State As Demonstrated By Freshman Of Central Washington State College, Malcolm Douglas Alexander

This paper presents the study of library skills possessed by the 1971 entering freshman class at Central Washington State College. The study was designed to provide data to library faculty about the skills in which the students required instruction. The students tested possessed a selected list of library skills at the 47th percentile as measured by Ethel M. Feagley' s test A Library Orientation Test For College Freshmen. The hypothesis that they would not possess the skills at the 50th percentile was upheld.
