The Devil In Recent American Law, L. Joe Dunman Sep 2019

The Devil In Recent American Law, L. Joe Dunman

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Despite its secular aspirations, the American legal system is permeated by Christian and other religious ideas. One of the religious ideas that frequently appears in recent American law is the devil—the unholy antithesis of all that is good in the world. Called by many names, such as Satan, Lucifer, or the Antichrist, the devil is no stranger to the United States court system. The devil arises from the hot depths primarily in five contexts: (1) as a source of injury to reputation in defamation cases; (2) as a prejudicial invocation made during criminal trials to secure conviction, harshen sentences, or …

Estimating The Size Of Earth’S Umbral Shadow Using Sky Brightness Light Curves During A Lunar Eclipse, J. Kevin Adkins, Jennifer J. Birriel Sep 2019

Estimating The Size Of Earth’S Umbral Shadow Using Sky Brightness Light Curves During A Lunar Eclipse, J. Kevin Adkins, Jennifer J. Birriel

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

We present a simple method to estimate the size of Earth’s umbral shadow in a classroom setting. The method uses the published sky brightness curves obtained during a total lunar eclipse and requires only a conceptual understanding of lunar eclipses and simple geometric considerations. It is suitable for use in introductory and upper level astronomy courses.

The Nuclear Environment Of The Nls1 Mrk 335: Obscuration Of The X-Ray Line Emission By A Variable Outflow, Dirk Grupe Sep 2019

The Nuclear Environment Of The Nls1 Mrk 335: Obscuration Of The X-Ray Line Emission By A Variable Outflow, Dirk Grupe

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

We present XMM–Newton, NuSTAR, Swift, and Hubble Space Telescope observations of the Narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 335 in a protracted low state in 2018 and 2019. The X-ray flux is at the lowest level so far observed, and the extremely low continuum flux reveals a host of soft X-ray emission lines from photoionized gas. The simultaneous UV flux drop suggests that the variability is intrinsic to the source, and we confirm this with broad-band X-ray spectroscopy. The dominance of the soft X-ray lines at low energies and distant reflection at high energies, is therefore due to the respective emission …

Three Propositions On The Education In Programming Languages, Euijin Kim Sep 2019

Three Propositions On The Education In Programming Languages, Euijin Kim

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

In the age of Big Data and artificial intelligence, programming languages are important for college students because the knowledge of programming can help them understand the modern technologies and make better decisions about the technologies. Nonetheless, programming language courses are not popular among college students. To attract more students, several suggestions have been made such as computational thinking (Wing, 2006) or application of the concept with easy programming approaches(Lye & Koh, 2014). These approaches, however, overlook the nature of programming (e.g., programming is about understanding computers). In this paper, a straight approach with three propositions on the education in programming …

The History And Archaeology Of The 1649 Treaty And Battle Of Zboriv, Adrian O. Mandzy

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

The Battle of Zboriv is one of the major events in Ukrainian and Polish history. The Zboriv battlefield was explored by a Ukrainian-American archeological expedition led by author and archeologist Bogdan Strotsen. The studies lasted several years. The article covers the history of the Zboriv battle and reveals the main results of archaeological research. The results of the studies allowed to hypothesize the construction of elements of field fortifications and to interpret their localization in the territory.

Identifying Academically At-Risk Incoming Freshmen At A Private University In Uruguay: Psychometric Evaluation Of A Mathematics Diagnostic Test, Wilson J. Gonzalez-Espada Aug 2019

Identifying Academically At-Risk Incoming Freshmen At A Private University In Uruguay: Psychometric Evaluation Of A Mathematics Diagnostic Test, Wilson J. Gonzalez-Espada

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

This study determined to what extent the mathematics diagnostic test (MDT) used at the Catholic University of Uruguay (CUU) was psychometrically appropriate. Also, after removing “red-flagged” items, the study measured to what extent MDT scores correlated with academic success. It was found that five MDT items (out of 30) did not meet the guidelines and were discarded. The score on the remaining items showed the highest correlation with the number of mathematics courses completed, confirming that students with low MDT-Revised scores might need additional academic support to remain in the engineering program.

Space Telescope And Optical Reverberation Mapping Project. Viii. Time Variability Of Emission And Absorption In Ngc5548 Based On Modeling The Ultraviolet Spectrum, Dirk Grupe Aug 2019

Space Telescope And Optical Reverberation Mapping Project. Viii. Time Variability Of Emission And Absorption In Ngc5548 Based On Modeling The Ultraviolet Spectrum, Dirk Grupe

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

We model the ultraviolet spectra of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC5548 obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope during the 6 month reverberation mapping campaign in 2014. Our model of the emission from NGC 5548 corrects for overlying absorption and deblends the individual emission lines. Using the modeled spectra, we measure the response to continuum variations for the deblended and absorption-corrected individual broad emission lines, the velocity-dependent profiles of Lyα and C IV, and the narrow and broad intrinsic absorption features. We find that the time lags for the corrected emission lines are comparable to those for the original data. The …

The X-Ray Resolved Supernova Remnant S8 In The Dwarf Irregular Galaxy Ic 1613, Thomas G. Pannuti Jul 2019

The X-Ray Resolved Supernova Remnant S8 In The Dwarf Irregular Galaxy Ic 1613, Thomas G. Pannuti

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

We conducted an observation of the nearby irregular galaxy IC 1613 with the Chandra X-ray Observatory using the S3 chip of the ACIS with an effective exposure time of 49.9 ksec. The observation primarily targeted the extensive bubble and star formation region in the northeast quadrant of the galaxy. The only known supernova remnant (SNR) in IC 1613, S8, is also the galaxy’s most luminous X-ray source (LX(0.3-8 keV) 5 − 6×1036 erg s−1). We resolve the SNR with Chandra and compare its nearly circular X-ray morphology with H and radio images. We assign an upper limit on the luminosity …

Revealing The Nature Of Central Emission Nebulae In The Dwarf Galaxy Ngc185, Thomas G. Pannuti

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Aims. In this paper we present new optical observations of the galaxy NGC185 intended to reveal the status of supernova remnants (SNRs) in this dwarf companion of the Andromeda galaxy. Previously, it was reported that this galaxy hosts one SNR. Methods. Our deep photometric study with the 2m telescope at Rozhen National Astronomical Observatory using narrow-band H and [S ii] filters revealed complex structure of the interstellar medium in the center of the galaxy. To confirm the classification and to study the kinematics of the detected nebulae, we carried out spectroscopic observations using the SCORPIO multi-mode spectrograph at the 6m …

Correlate Not Optional: Pp Sprouting And Parallelism In “Much Less” Ellipsis, Katy Carlson, Jesse A. Harris Jun 2019

Correlate Not Optional: Pp Sprouting And Parallelism In “Much Less” Ellipsis, Katy Carlson, Jesse A. Harris

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Clauses that are parallel in form and meaning show processing advantages in ellipsis and coordination structures (Frazier et al. 1984; Kehler 2000; Carlson 2002). However, the constructions that have been used to show a parallelism advantage do not always require a strong semantic relationship between clauses. We present two eye tracking while reading studies on focus-sensitive coordination structures, an understudied form of ellipsis which requires the generation of a contextually salient semantic relation or scale between conjuncts. However, when the remnant of ellipsis lacks an overt correlate in the matrix clause and must be “sprouted” in the ellipsis site, the …

Taiwanese Residents’ Perceived Social, Economic, Recreational And Political Benefits For Hosting The 2017 Universiade Games, Steve Chen

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Hosting mega sporting events has been viewed as a great method to provide the host city and nation publicity, recognition, pride, and even economic benefits. This study aims to investigate the perceptions of Taiwanese residents on the social, economic, recreational, and political impact for hosting 2017 World University Games. The researchers used a self-created 7-point Likert survey to collect 1,021 responses from February to April of 2017. The survey covered four main constructs: (1) National and Cultural Spirit and Hospitality, (2) Financial and Recreational Factor, (3) Negative Social Consequences, and (4) Support for the Events and Political Concern. The results …

Females Serving As The Head Coach Of Competitive Elite Male Sports, Steve Chen, Christian Hensley Jun 2019

Females Serving As The Head Coach Of Competitive Elite Male Sports, Steve Chen, Christian Hensley

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

The recent coaching employment of Becky Hammon and Kathryn Smith in the NBA and NFL inspired the discussion of the potential of witnessing the first female head coach hired in men’s professional basketball and football. Despite the presence of female leaders in many business and political realms, there still seems to be a lack of gender equality in the employment of female administrators and coaches in the male-dominant sports. This study investigates how women were perceived as ideal head coaching candidates in a male dominant sport based on 132 student-athletes’ responses (70 males and 62 females). An exploratory factor analysis …

Comparing Absorbed Doses Of Properly And Improperly Collimated Abdominal Exposures, Ignacio Birriel May 2019

Comparing Absorbed Doses Of Properly And Improperly Collimated Abdominal Exposures, Ignacio Birriel

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

The purpose of this study was to calculate and compare the absorbed doses of properly and improperly collimated repeat examination exposures and to measure the anode heel effect to determine the difference in intensity between the cathode and anode ends of the x-ray beam. The investigators wanted to document the amount of additional radiation a patient receives due to improper collimation techniques and determine whether the difference in intensity between the anode and cathode ends of the x-ray beam was large enough to cause concern for increased patient absorbed doses for specific radiography examinations.

Avarice And Ambition In America: The Founders’ Debate On The Political Place Of The Selfish Passions In The Constitutional Order Of The United States, Jonathan W. Pidluzny, Murray S. Y. Besette Apr 2019

Avarice And Ambition In America: The Founders’ Debate On The Political Place Of The Selfish Passions In The Constitutional Order Of The United States, Jonathan W. Pidluzny, Murray S. Y. Besette

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Federalists and Anti-Federalists were different kinds of republicans insofar as they offered opposite solutions to the perennial problem of republican government. The Anti-Federalists hoped to minimize faction by cultivating piety, self-control, and patriotism in the citizenry. The Federalists rejected the traditional approach. Instead, they unleashed the selfish passions for the sake of economic and military strength. To mitigate the pernicious effects of faction along economic lines, they designed the constitutional order to channel elite ambition in service to the republic. They seem not to have foreseen, however, that in unleashing human greed they risked creating an environment that would corrupt …

The Xmm-Newton/Hst View Of The Obscuring Outflow In The Seyfert Galaxy Mrk 335 Observed At Extremely Low X-Ray Flux, Dirk Grupe Apr 2019

The Xmm-Newton/Hst View Of The Obscuring Outflow In The Seyfert Galaxy Mrk 335 Observed At Extremely Low X-Ray Flux, Dirk Grupe

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

The Seyfert galaxy Mrk 335 is known for its frequent changes of flux and spectral shape in the X-ray band that occurred during recent years. These variations may be explained by the onset of a wind that previous, noncontemporaneous high-resolution spectroscopy in X-ray and UV bands located at accretion disk scale. A simultaneous new campaign by XMM-Newton and the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) caught the source at a historically low flux in the X-ray band. The soft X-ray spectrum is dominated by prominent emission features and by the effect of a strong ionized absorber with an outflow velocity of (5–6)×103kms−1. …

Murchison Widefield Array And Xmm-Newton Observations Of The Galactic Supernova Remnant G5.9+3.1, Thomas G. Pannuti

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Aims. In this paper we discuss the radio continuum and X-ray properties of the so-far poorly studied Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) G5.9 + 3.1. Methods. We present the radio spectral energy distribution (SED) of the Galactic SNR G5.9 + 3.1 obtained with the MurchisonWidefield Array (MWA). Combining these new observations with the surveys at other radio continuum frequencies, we discuss the integrated radio continuum spectrum of this particular remnant. We have also analyzed an archival XMM-Newton observation, which represents the first detection of X-ray emission from this remnant. Results. The SNR SED is very well explained by a simple power-law …

Multiwavelength Study Of The X-Ray Bright Supernova Remnant N522-S48 In Ngc 522, Thomas G. Pannuti

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

We present a multiwavelength examination of the supernova remnant (SNR) S26 in the nearby galaxy NGC 300 using data from Chandra X-ray Observatory, XMM-Newton X-ray Observatory, Hubble Space Telescope (HST), the Very Large Array, and the Australia Telescope Compact Array. We simultaneously fit all of the available X-ray data with a thermal plasma model and find a temperature of 0.77±0.13 keV with a hydrogen column density of (9.7+6.4 −4.8)×1020 cm−2. HST imaging allows us to measure a semimajor axis of 0.78±0.10 arcsec (7.5±1.0 pc) and a semiminor axis of 0.69+0.14 −0.12 arcsec (6.7+1.2 −1.4 pc). This precise size helps to …

Discovery Of A Pulsar-Powered Bow Shock Nebula In The Small Magellanic Cloud Supernova Remnant Dems5, Thomas G. Pannuti Apr 2019

Discovery Of A Pulsar-Powered Bow Shock Nebula In The Small Magellanic Cloud Supernova Remnant Dems5, Thomas G. Pannuti

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

We report the discovery of a new Small Magellanic Cloud pulsar wind nebula (PWN) at the edge of the supernova remnant (SNR) DEMS5. The pulsar powered object has a cometary morphology similar to the Galactic PWN analogues PSR B1951+32 and ‘the mouse’. It is travelling supersonically through the interstellar medium. We estimate the pulsar kick velocity to be in the range of 700–2000 km s−1 for an age between 28 and 10 kyr. The radio spectral index for this SNR–PWN–pulsar system is flat (–0.29 ± 0.01) consistent with other similar objects. We infer that the putative pulsar has a radio spectral …

Sky Brightness At Zenith During The January 2019 Total Lunar Eclipse, Jennifer J. Birriel, J. Kevin Adkins Apr 2019

Sky Brightness At Zenith During The January 2019 Total Lunar Eclipse, Jennifer J. Birriel, J. Kevin Adkins

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Lunar eclipses occur during the full moon phase when the moon is obscured by Earth’s shadow. During these events, the night sky brightness changes as the full moon rises and then passes first into the penumbral and then the umbral shadow. We acquired sky brightness data at zenith using a Unihedron Sky Quality Meter during the 20–21 January 2019 total lunar eclipse as seen from Morehead, Kentucky. The resulting sky brightness curve shows an obvious signature when the moon enters the umbral (partial) eclipse phases and the total eclipse phase. During the total eclipse phase, the brightness curve is flat …

Swift, Nustar And Xmm-Newton Observations Of The Nls1 Galaxy Rxj2317.8–4422 In An Extreme X-Ray Low Flux State, Dirk Grupe

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

We report the discovery of RX J2317.8–4422 in an extremely low X-ray flux state by the Neil Gehrels Swift observatory in 2014 April/May. In total, the low-energy X-ray emission dropped by a factor 100. We have carried out multi-wavelength follow- up observations of this Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy. Here we present observations with Swift, XMM-Newton, and NuSTAR in October and November 2014 and further monitoring observations by Swift from 2015 to 2018. Compared with the beginning of the Swift observations in 2005, in the November 2014 XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observation RX J2317–4422.8 dropped by a factor of about 80 in …

Strongly Bipolar Inner Ejecta Of The Normal Type Iip Supernova Asassn-16at, Dirk Grupe Mar 2019

Strongly Bipolar Inner Ejecta Of The Normal Type Iip Supernova Asassn-16at, Dirk Grupe

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

We report distinctly double-peaked Hα and Hβ emission lines in the late-time, nebular-phase spectra (200 days) of the otherwise normal at early phases (100 days) type IIP supernova ASASSN-16at (SN 2016X). Such distinctly double-peaked nebular Balmer lines have never been observed for a type IISN. The nebular-phase Balmer emission is driven by the radioactive 56Co decay, so the observed line profile bifurcation suggests a strong bipolarity in the 56Ni distribution or in the line-forming region of the inner ejecta. The strongly bifurcated blueshifted and redshifted peaks are separated by ∼3×103 km s−1 and are roughly symmetrically positioned with respect to …
