Mapping Uk Eportfolio Developments Within A European Context, Gordon Joyes, Elizabeth Hartnell-Young
Dr Elizabeth Hartnell-Young
This chapter outlines the European context of lifelong learning and educational cooperation across member states and the relationship of eportfolios to current development. It focuses specifically on the priority given to portfolio developments in Higher Education in the UK through reports and policy documents and particularly through the extensive funding distributed via the Joint Information Systems Committee of the Higher Education and Further Education Funding Councils (JISC). The chapter provides an overview of current eportfolio use and points to future trends for technical and pedagogical development, drawing on the extensive JISC project archive, which covers examples from many disciplines and …

Measuring Financial Literacy Among Students: An Application Of Rasch Analysis, Paola Bongini, Paolo Trivellato, Mariangela Zenga
Paola Bongini
We examined financial literacy among Italian college students using Rasch analysis. Our findings support the appeal of adopting such technique in measuring financial literacy: the set of information provided is not limited to a crude figure, indicating whether the population has passed or failed the test; on the contrary, it provides useful information on the specific areas where deficiencies are occurring the most and which specific group presents the highest knowledge deficit
An Approximate Microaggregation Approach For Microdata Protection, Xiaoxun Sun, H Wang, J Li, Y Zhang
An Approximate Microaggregation Approach For Microdata Protection, Xiaoxun Sun, H Wang, J Li, Y Zhang
Xiaoxun Sun
Microdata protection is a hot topic in the field of Statistical Disclosure Control, which has gained special interest after the disclosure of 658,000 queries by the America Online (AOL) search engine in August 2006. Many algorithms, methods and properties have been proposed to deal with microdata disclosure. One of the emerging concepts in microdata protection is k-anonymity, introduced by Samarati and Sweeney. k-Anonymity provides a simple and efficient approach to protect private individual information and is gaining increasing popularity. k-Anonymity requires that every record in the microdata table released be indistinguishably related to no fewer than k respondents. In this …

Ten Hypotheses About Tolerance Among Latin American Adolescents, Daniel Caro, Wolfram Schulz
Ten Hypotheses About Tolerance Among Latin American Adolescents, Daniel Caro, Wolfram Schulz
Dr Wolfram Schulz
Discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation, race, mental and/or physical disability, religious background, HIV/AIDS status, and ethnic origin affects the well-being of minorities and society in general. Recent research in North America underscores the importance of contact with diverse networks, intergroup discussions, a social dominance orientation, religious beliefs, and the school climate, among other factors, to explain tolerance for minorities. Theoretical and empirical work in Latin America is less extensive and has been limited by the lack of quantitative data. This article evaluates 10 different hypotheses about tolerance, using data from eighth-grade students in six Latin American countries that …
Fit-To-Model Statistics For Evaluating Quality Of Bayesian Student Ability Estimation, Ling Tan
Fit-To-Model Statistics For Evaluating Quality Of Bayesian Student Ability Estimation, Ling Tan
Dr Ling Tan
Bayesian ability estimation is a statistical inferential framework constructed from a measurement model and a prior knowledge model. It is attractive in practice because Bayesian estimation methods offer an elegant way to incorporate appropriate knowledge on target ability distribution in order to improve the accuracy of ability estimation, when there are uncertainties or errors in observable data. One hurdle for applying Bayesian-based methods is evaluating the validity of Bayesian ability estimates at individual-level. This study investigated a class of fit-to-model statistics for quantifying the evidence used in learning Bayesian estimates. The relationship between fit-to-model statistics and root mean square error …

Subtle Cognitive Impairment In Elders With Mini-Mental State Examination Scores Within The ‘Normal’ Range, Tim Friedman, G Yelland, S Robinson
Subtle Cognitive Impairment In Elders With Mini-Mental State Examination Scores Within The ‘Normal’ Range, Tim Friedman, G Yelland, S Robinson
Dr Tim Friedman
The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) is commonly used as a screening test for dementia, yet MMSE scores above the cut-off for dementia (24–30) are widely thought to have limited utility, particularly in older persons. The study investigates whether scores within this range can be indicative of pre-symptomatic levels of cognitive impairment. Ninety-six community-dwelling older persons aged 62–89 years (mean = 75.2 years), who had obtained MMSE scores between 25 and 30, were tested on the computer-based Subtle Cognitive Impairment Test (SCIT). Compared with individuals who obtained a perfect score of 30 on the MMSE, individuals with scores of 28–29 made …
Student Reactions To Learning With Technologies: Perceptions And Outcomes, Kathryn Moyle
Student Reactions To Learning With Technologies: Perceptions And Outcomes, Kathryn Moyle
Professor Kathryn Moyle
While the creation and adoption of new technologies has increased in recent years, the educational sector often limits technology use. Despite this, many researchers are convinced of the vital role that technologies can play in learning and teaching. Student Reactions to Learning with Technologies: Perceptions and Outcomes brings together recent research findings about the views and expectations of students when including technologies in their studies. The chapters in this book suggest that the use of technologies in teaching not only makes learning more interesting but also offers possibilities for variations in the learning processes. While this book does not offer …

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FKE), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia teaching and learning processes was duly certified to ISO 9001:2000. One of the top management commitments is to meet Engineering Accreditation Council of Malaysia (EAC) program accreditation requirements. EAC adopts the American Board of Engineering and Technology 2000 (ABET) principles which promote outcome based education (OBE) learning process. OBE calls for the evaluation of the course learning outcomes (LO) as specified in each Course Outline. Performance Measurement has been largely dependent on students' performance in carrying out tasks such as tests, quizzes or submission of assignments. Evaluation on the performance outputs; …

Purpose: This study compares the development of essential elements of narrative skill in children from African American English (AAE)- and general American English (GAE)-speaking communities using an innovative elicitation and evaluation paradigm. The measures include: 1) reference contrasting, 2) temporal expressions, 3) mental state descriptions, and 4) understanding of behavior based on false belief. Method: Participants were 291 AAE speakers and 238 GAE speakers, 4 to 9 years of age. Approximately one-third of both dialect groups were identified as language impaired. Children generated two stories based on short picture sequences. Their stories were coded for the four key indices of …

Working Through Whiteness: White Male College Students Challenging Racism, Nolan L. Cabrera
Nolan L. Cabrera
This qualitative study relies upon Freire’s conception of liberatory praxis to examine White male college students becoming aware of racism and translating this awareness into action. The participants developed racial cognizance via both cross-racial contact and course content. Key to this development was empathy derived from minority experiences that facilitated a willingness to understand racial minority experiences. The participants took actions against racism but continued to struggle with race (e.g., essentializing minority experiences). The findings demonstrate the importance of race-based education, empathy, and cross-racial contact in promoting racial identity development, while also illustrating the nonlinear trajectory of racial identity development.

Scholars and practitioners continuously espouse the importance of research in student affairs work. This study empirically examined student affairs professionals’ engagement in research. Results indicated that professionals desire to engage research, but struggle to do so regularly. Gender and education are not factors in level of research engagement, but job level is. Graduate students reported significantly higher research engagement than did full-time professionals.
