Two Way Teaching And Learning : Toward Culturally Reflective And Relevant Education, Gina Milgate, Nola Purdie, Hannah Bell

Within the Education Revolution lies another, thus far quieter revolution that attempts to raise the profile and status of First Peoples' culture in the Australian cultural complex. This book addresses the coalface of this revolution where two cultures meet; in the classroom, the school, the community, and in both state and national education curricula. Contributors are mostly experienced Indigenous practitioners drawn from academia, the teaching profession and the community. They put the spotlight on policies and processes that serve to either facilitate an informed, respectful relationship in education, or act to reinforce cultural inequity and inequality. Policy implications that can …
Injecting Purpose And Trust Into Data Anonymisation, Xiaoxun Sun, H Wang, J Li, Y Zhang
Injecting Purpose And Trust Into Data Anonymisation, Xiaoxun Sun, H Wang, J Li, Y Zhang

Data anonymisation is of increasing importance for allowing sharing individual data among various data requesters for a variety of social network data analysis and mining applications. Most existing works of data anonymisation target at the optimization of the anonymisation metrics to balance the data utility and privacy, whereas they ignore the effects of a requester’s trust level and application purposes during the data anonymisation. Our aim of this paper is to propose a much finer level anonymisation scheme with regard to the data requester’s trust and specific application purpose. We firstly prioritize the attributes for anonymisation based on their importance …
The Analysis Of Measurement Equivalence In International Studies Using The Rasch Model, Wolfram Schulz, Julian Fraillon
The Analysis Of Measurement Equivalence In International Studies Using The Rasch Model, Wolfram Schulz, Julian Fraillon
Dr Wolfram Schulz
When comparing data derived from tests or questionnaires in cross-national studies, researchers commonly assume measurement invariance in their underlying scaling models. However, different cultural contexts, languages, and curricula can have powerful effects on how students respond in different countries. This article illustrates how the application of the Rasch item response theory (IRT) model (Rasch, 1960) can be used for assessing differences in measurement properties of tests and questionnaires with reference to examples from the field trial analyses for the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS). It also discusses the general …

Student Engagement With Science In Early Adolescence : The Contribution Of Enjoyment To Students' Continuing Interest In Learning About Science, John Ainley, Mary Ainley
Dr John Ainley
Recent research has expanded understanding of the contribution of emotions to student engagement and achievement. Achievement emotions can be conceptualized as general ways of responding to achievement settings or specific emotional states aroused during a specific learning activity. Emotion processes can be distinguished as positive or negative, activating or deactivating. Using data from an international survey of science achievement (PISA 2006; N > 400,000 15-year-old students from 57 countries), relations between the positive, activating achievement emotion of enjoyment and a number of variables that combine with enjoyment to define students’ engagement with learning science are examined. Previously, we reported that enjoyment …

The Development Of Regional Instruments, David Kerr, Wolfram Schulz, Julian Fraillon
The Development Of Regional Instruments, David Kerr, Wolfram Schulz, Julian Fraillon
Dr Wolfram Schulz
The International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) included regional modules for Europe, Latin America, and Asia. Thirty-five of the 38 countries that participated in ICCS opted to be involved in these regional modules. Twenty-four countries participated in the European module, six in the Latin American module, and five countries in the Asian module. Regional instruments were developed for each module and were administered to students after they had completed the international assessment. These instruments were designed to address aspects of civic and citizenship education specific to each region. The results of these additional data collections are reported in a …
On The Identity Anonymization Of High-Dimensional Rating Data, Xiaoxun Sun, H Wang, Y Zhang
On The Identity Anonymization Of High-Dimensional Rating Data, Xiaoxun Sun, H Wang, Y Zhang
Xiaoxun Sun
We study the challenges of protecting the privacy of individuals in a large public survey rating data. The survey rating data usually contains both ratings of sensitive and non-sensitive issues. The ratings of sensitive issues involve personal privacy. Although the survey participants do not reveal any of their ratings, their survey records are potentially identifiable by using information from other public sources. None of the existing anonymization principles (e.g. k-anonymity, l-diversity, etc.) can effectively prevent such breaches in large survey rating data sets. In this paper, we tackle the problem by defining a principle called (k, epsilon, l)-anonymity. The principle …

Queensland Teachers’ Conceptions Of Assessment: The Impact Of Policy Priorities On Teacher Attitudes, Gavin Brown, Robert Lake, Gabrielle Matters
Queensland Teachers’ Conceptions Of Assessment: The Impact Of Policy Priorities On Teacher Attitudes, Gavin Brown, Robert Lake, Gabrielle Matters
Dr Gabrielle Matters
The conceptions Queensland teachers have about assessment purposes were surveyed in 2003 with an abridged version of the Teacher Conceptions of Assessment Inventory. Multi-group analysis found that a model with four factors, somewhat different in structure to previous studies, was statistically different between Queensland primary and (lower) secondary teachers. Primary teachers agreed more than secondary teachers that ‘assessment improves teaching and learning’, while the latter agreed more that it ‘makes students accountable’. The inter-correlation of ‘assessment is irrelevant’ to ‘makes students accountable’ was statistically stronger for primary teachers. Teacher beliefs reflected the differing practices of assessment by level of schooling.

The International Civic And Citizenship Education Study (Iccs), Wolfram Schulz, Julian Fraillon, John Ainley
Dr John Ainley
The IEA International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) investigated the ways in which young people are prepared for, and consequently ready and able to undertake their roles as citizens. Consequently, it studied student knowledge and understanding of civics and citizenship as well as affective and behavioral aspects of civics and citizenship such as value beliefs, attitudes, intended behaviors and current activities related to civic and citizenship education. Contextual data from education systems and schools were analyzed to help explain variation in these outcome variables. ICCS built on the previous IEA studies of civic education (Arnadeo et. al., 2002; Schulz …

Iccs Test Development, Julian Fraillon
Julian Fraillon
The ICCS civic knowledge assessment was developed over an 18-month period from October 2006 to April 2008. Most of the ICCS test-item development was conducted by the international study center (ISC) at the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) in collaboration with the study’s national research coordinators (NRCs) and the Project Advisory Committee (PAC). This chapter provides a detailed description of the test-development process, review procedures, and the test design implemented for the ICCS field trial and main survey. Table 2.1 provides an overview of the test-development processes and timeline.

This article provides a history of adult numeracy teaching, looking back at the rise and development if adult numeracy provision, mainly in Victoria, from the perspective of an ANT (adult numeracy teacher), beginning in the late 1970s. The author then describes what lies on the horizon, what lessons adult educators can learn, and what opportunities might lie ahead for adult numeracy in the next decade or so. The article contains an exposition on the benefits of explicitly recognising and supporting numeracy within the language, literacy and numeracy equation. The author argues that, given the Australian data from ALLS, there is …

The Graduate Pathways Survey: New Insights On Education And Employment Outcomes Five Years After Bachelor Degree Completion, Hamish Coates, Daniel Edwards
The Graduate Pathways Survey: New Insights On Education And Employment Outcomes Five Years After Bachelor Degree Completion, Hamish Coates, Daniel Edwards
Dr Daniel Edwards
The development of a strong and vibrant knowledge-based economy is linked in direct ways with successful graduate outcomes. Building evidence-based insights on such outcomes plays an important role in shaping planning and practice. With this broad objective in mind, this article analyses findings from the Graduate Pathways Survey, the first national study in Australia of bachelor degree graduate outcomes five years after course completion. It begins by discussing key rationales and research contexts to position the study internationally and in terms of research on graduate careers, quality assurance and planning. Focus is then turned to highlighting findings from the study, …

A Semantic Analysis Approach For Assessing Professionalism Using Free-Form Text Entered Online, Roger H. Blake

This paper presents the results of an experimental study to measure professionalism for the purpose of assessing a professional development program. Soft skills such as professionalism are increasingly recognized as important, yet measuring and assessing these skills, typically best acquired experientially, has remained challenging. Following established research, we conceptualize professionalism as a construct with the dimensions of autonomy, commitment, belief in public service, self-regulation, and the use of a professional organization as a major referent. We demonstrate how these dimensions can be expressed and the professionalism of free-form text responses measured. These responses are reflections submitted online by participants in …

Portfolio Management Districts And Rebuilding Inequality, Brian R. Beabout
Brian R. Beabout
Despite over fifty years of near-constant educational reform movements in the USA, most attempts at improving outcomes in urban public schools have meet with predictable failure (Sarason, 1990). The recently coined term Portfolio Management Models (Bulkley, Henig & Levin, 2010) describes a reform to citywide governance in which the district serves as a coordinator of public education services, rather than the single provider of these services. Cities such as New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, and New Orleans are noted for having schools run by a variety of groups including national and local charter operators, magnets and neighborhood schools run by the …
