Executive Summary: During the Fall Quarter of 1990, all enrollees of English 101 and English 100 took ACT's Collegiate Assessment of Academic Proficiency (CAAP) Writing Test (Essay); during the Winter and Spring Quarters all enrollees of English 101 took the CAAP test. Administration of the test was done by a joint effort of Western Washington University's Composition Program in the Department of English and the Office of Institutional Assessment and Testing. The CAAP test took two samples, both requiring students to respond in a persuasive or argumentative mode. Introduction The sample of students whose records were analyzed in the Math Placement Test study published by the Office of Institutional Assessment and Testing earlier this month contained very few students who had taken the Basic Algebra level of the placement test. Therefore, another sample of students was drawn to in order to investigate the relationship of Basic Algebra Test scores to final mathematics course grade and to predict the probability a student has of passing (receiving a grade of c- or better) Math 102 or Math 151 depending upon the score he or she earned on the Basic Algebra …

Executive Summary: This study utilized the records of two samples of wwu upper¬ division students (those with 90 credits and above) to evaluate the relationships of academic performance to students' admission status (either native or transfer) and other selected student characteristics such as gender, ethnicity, and age. The first sample measured academic performance in terms of cumulative WWU GPA. The second sample looked at grades earned in 300 and 400 level courses only (upper-division GPA). This report was prepared as a follow-up to an earlier study that used a much more limited sample. Females were found to have consistently higher …

Executive Summary: The Math Placement Tests have been used by all four-year institutions in the state of Washington to aid in the placement of students into their first college-level mathematics course since 1984. This report was prepared in response to concerns of Western Washington University's Mathematics Department regarding the usefulness of. the placement tests in correctly placing students in mathematics courses. The relationships of the math placement tests to final mathematics course grade and other indicators of academic achievement, including high school GPA, WPCT-Q score, and SAT-M score were evaluated. Executive Summary: This report provides a summary of student responses to the Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) survey given to Western's 1985 and 1989 incoming freshman classes. The CIRP survey is used to gather information about the characteristics, •• interests, and goals of first-time freshmen nationwide. The majority of incoming freshmen in both 1985 and 1989 were female, 18 years old, U.S. citizens, and native speakers of English. Western's 1989 freshman class was more ethnically diverse than its 1985 counterpart. The proportion of students who were Caucasian went down during this four-year period while the proportion of students from ethnic …

Executive Summary: This report compiled information gathered in interviews with a sample of personnel managers and direct supervisors of organizations employing Western Washington University graduates from one to three years after their graduation. Personnel managers were questioned first. When asked to rate their emphasis of nine qualities of general employment, work or internship experience received the highest ratings of "great" emphasis. Having a broad liberal arts background received the highest ratings of "little" or "no" emphasis. A majority of personnel managers preferred that employees be flexible (47.4%), or valued skill training and flexibility equally (41.8%). It was also discovered that …

Originally, it was included as part of a report to the Assessment Task Force, whose directors and coordinators represent all Washington State universities, four-year colleges, and community colleges. The purpose of the Assessment Task Force is to address the Higher Education Coordinating Board's mandate that Washington State institutions of higher learning develop a system of assessment, which will in turn improve the quality of education in this state. Executive Summary: During Winter Quarter of 1990, all college department chairs and the deans of Huxley and Fairhaven Colleges were sent a questionnaire intended to delineate admission and graduation requirements. The questionnaire was followed by a telephone or in-person interview. For the purposes of readability, all respondents are referred to as departments. The survey results showed that nineteen departments have self-generated admission requirements, whose categories are as follows: 1) overall university GPA; 2) completion of foundation courses; 3) GPA within foundation courses; 4) credit completion; 5) audition, portfolio, or resume review. Sixteen of the above nineteen departments have multiple requirements. …

Executive Summary: This report presents the results of analyses of the relationships between a student's admission status, his or her grade point average and a variety of student characteristics, including gender, ethnicity, and age. The records for a sample of 982 Western Washington University upper-division students were provided by the University's Registrar for analysis. Upper-division undergraduates, defined as those having between 80 and 100 WWU credits, had an average GPA of 2.91. Students who began their higher education at Western (natives) were found to have a higher average GPA (2.96) than students who transfered from a two-year institution (2.85). These …
