An Analysis Of Ability Grouping Of Mathematics Students At The Argenta-Oreana Middle School, Steven L. Mitchell
An Analysis Of Ability Grouping Of Mathematics Students At The Argenta-Oreana Middle School, Steven L. Mitchell
Masters Theses
This field experience investigated the effects of ability grouping mathematics students at the Argenta-Oreana Middle School in Oreana, Illinois. This study investigated the perceptions of teacher attitudes toward abilty grouping mathematics students, the effects ability grouping has had on grades assigned to eighth grade students and the effects ability grouping has had on eighth grade student achievement test scores. A two tailed t-test for the difference of means at the .05 level of significance was used to analyze the data collected. The perception survey information collected from 11 teachers determined that no statistically significant differences existed between the perceptions of …
A Comparison Of The Predictive Ability Of Selected Variables Upon Success On The American Society Of Clinical Pathologists Medical Technology Registry Exam, Carmine Thomas Somma Jr.
A Comparison Of The Predictive Ability Of Selected Variables Upon Success On The American Society Of Clinical Pathologists Medical Technology Registry Exam, Carmine Thomas Somma Jr.
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The use of the Allied Health Professions Admissions Test (AHPAT) as an admission tool to upper level medical technology programs was compared against the most commonly accepted criteria of overall grade point average (OG) and science grade point average (SG). The comparison was based on how well each predicted success on the Board of Registry Exam of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. The sample population included admission and program data on 129 graduates of a University 2 + 2 Medical Technology Program from 1980 to 1986. The population consisted mostly of white (81.4%) (n = 105) females (83.0%) (n …
Pre-Academy Placement In The Washington State Patrol: Factors Associated With Academy And Job Performance, Richard Franklin Hamack
Pre-Academy Placement In The Washington State Patrol: Factors Associated With Academy And Job Performance, Richard Franklin Hamack
All Master's Theses
Washington State Patrol Trooper Cadets serve in a number of positions, a number of locations across the state and for varying lengths of time before they are selected to attend the academy. The purpose of the present research was to determine whether these factors were related to subsequent academy performance and job performance.
To that end, 255 cadets hired between 1979 and 1985 were studied. The results indicated that only pre-academy assignment duration was significantly correlated with academy completion and academy performance. Implications for further research and departmental policy are discussed.
The Relationship Of Hemispheric Performance And Reading Achievement For Black And Caucasian Fourth- And Fifth- Grade Students, Helen Dorothy Byoune
The Relationship Of Hemispheric Performance And Reading Achievement For Black And Caucasian Fourth- And Fifth- Grade Students, Helen Dorothy Byoune
Dissertations
Problem. The relationship between race and hemispheric performance and the resultant effects of this relationship on learning pose a problem for educators. This study sought to determine whether Black students have a style of cerebral processing different from Caucasian students and whether this cognitive style leads to under achievement in certain subject areas.
Method. The Cognitive Laterality Battery (CLB) was used to measure hemisphericity for 111 fourth- and fifth-grade students categorized into four groups: Blacks, Caucasians, males and females. Ninety-seven of these students comprised the population for this study. The results from the CLB were then used to determine whether …

An Analysis Of Factors Associated With The Change In Graduation Requirements At Champaign Centennial High School, David H. Pike
An Analysis Of Factors Associated With The Change In Graduation Requirements At Champaign Centennial High School, David H. Pike
Masters Theses
The graduation requirements for the students at Champaign Centennial High School, Champaign, Illinois, changed effective with the class of 1988. This field experience investigated the possible effects of the new and more stringent graduation requirements. A comparative analysis using students in the classes of 1985, 1986, and 1987 for the baseline data with the students in the classes of 1988 and 1989 was completed. Specifically, the evaluator designed a procedure to statistically study the students' American College Test and SRA Survey of Basic Skills Test scores. A two tailed t-test for the difference of the means at the .05 level …
Parent Participation In The Educational Process And Student Achievement, Linda Worrell Deans
Parent Participation In The Educational Process And Student Achievement, Linda Worrell Deans
Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education
The purpose of this study was to determine the level of parental involvement between parent and child as well as between parent and school. After the level of parent participation was established, the data set was used to determine whether a relationship exists between the level of parental involvement and student achievement at selected secondary urban schools. The selected secondary schools include two different school divisions.
The study employed five approaches: (1) a descriptive analysis of the variables of parental interaction with the child as it relates to a personal, affective level; a monitoring level; and a social level; as …
Reforming The Assessment Of Student Achievement In The Senior Secondary School, Geoff Masters, P Hill
Reforming The Assessment Of Student Achievement In The Senior Secondary School, Geoff Masters, P Hill
Prof Geoff Masters AO
The challenge that confronts agencies responsible for assessment and reporting in the senior secondary school is to extend systematic assessment procedures to broader range of learning outcomes than those currently assessed by public examination, to develop methods of reporting which are more descriptive of individual achievement and which provide a better basis for describing and maintaining standards, and to provide results which are sufficiently comparable across schools to enable fair comparisons of applicants for tertiary study. Some recent developments in assessment and reporting practice are considered with a view to identifying methods and approaches capable of satisfying this diverse set …

Anchor Tests, Score Equating And Sex Bias, Geoff Masters
Anchor Tests, Score Equating And Sex Bias, Geoff Masters
Prof Geoff Masters AO
This paper discusses the use of anchor tests (scaling tests) to bring two or more sets of scores to a common scale. Particular attention is given to the rescaling of school based assessments against an external test or examination and to potential sources of bias in this procedure. The need for routine validity checks is emphasised, and a latent trait approach to constructing a statistical framework for tests and examination score equating is described and illustrated. Bias caused by rescaling school assessments against an inappropriate anchor test is illustrated using a 1984 attempt to rescale students assessments in English against …

The Analysis Of Partial Credit Scoring, Geoff Masters
The Analysis Of Partial Credit Scoring, Geoff Masters
Prof Geoff Masters AO
This article discusses a range of issues in the practical application of an item response theory (IRT) method for partial credit scoring. After a brief discussion of partial credit scoring as an alternative to right-wrong scoring in the measurment of educational achievement, an IRT model for partial credit analysis is developed and described. This model is presented as a straightforward and logical application of Rasch's dichotomous model to a sequence of ordered response alternatives. The distinctive nature of the item parameters in the model is described and these parameters are contrasted with two more familiar sets of parameters: Thurstone thresholds …

Item Discrimination: When More Is Worse, Geoff Masters
Item Discrimination: When More Is Worse, Geoff Masters
Prof Geoff Masters AO
High item discrimination can be a symptom of a special kind of measurement disturbance introduced by an item that gives persons of high ability a special advantage over and above their higher abilities. This type of disturbance, which can be interpreted as a form of item bias, can be encouraged by methods that routinely interpret highly discriminating items as the best items on a test and may be compounded by procedures that weight items by their discrimination. The type of measurement disturbance described and illustrated in this paper occurs when an item is sensitive to individual differences on a second, …
