This report examines the activities of the Exploratory Studies Program which was established during Fall 2015. There were 240 Exploratory (undeclared students) during Fall 2015, 188 of whom were enrolled in Freshman Inquiry. However, because we believe that all freshmen can benefit from Exploratory curriculum, Advising and Career Services partnered with University Studies to deliver decision making and career curriculum in all Freshman Inquiry courses, potentially reaching ~1400 students.

The Provost’s Challenge project #113, reTHINKING Access to Student Support with the MAPS Widget, explored the online presence of University Studies (UNST) peer-mentor support team called Mentors Advocating and Promoting Success (MAPS). The grant money was used to create an online widget as a tool to access MAPS team by fellow mentors and students (SINQ + FRINQ) when in need. The project demonstrates that the widget tool not only facilitates instant access of the team’s support and resources, but it also is seen as a tool to document concerns that affect student retention within the University.

About 10% of freshmen students who are admitted in fall do not transition to winter term and about 15-20% of the students who complete their freshmen year do not return the following fall. In addition, students who have major concerns about financing their education and students who are not sure about their plans (as identified in FRINQ Prior Learning Survey) tend to leave at a higher rate. Similarly, students with HS GPA below 3.0 and conditionally admitted students tend to leave at a higher rate. Undergraduate Mentors in Freshman Inquiry are placed in a unique position of influence. With each spending one entire year working with a single class, mentors will color the educational experience of over 1,200 Portland State freshmen each year. Given this significant role, it is important that mentors are demographically representative of the PSU student body. This analysis revealed that the group of students enrolled in FRINQ who report speaking a language other than English in their homes is made up of immigrants, US born and international students who speak a wide range of languages. These students are likely to be first-generation college students and work fewer hours than their peers. Academically, writing is expressed as the top area where non-native speakers need support and they also express a need for help finding employment.
