Workshops delivered to department heads of participating schools to help schools utilise the released items in TIMSS and PISA by: educating participants about the cognitive skills and processes assessed by TIMSS and PISA in the domains of Mathematics and Science; demonstrating to participants ways that content skills are assessed in TIMSS and PISA items; demonstrating to participants some of the item types and provide recommendations for how teachers can introduce these item types to students; and enabling participants to provide training/orientation to teachers within their schools.

Video-Based Reseach Made "Easy" Methodological Lessons Learned From The Timms Video Studies, Jennifer Jacobs, Hilary Hollingsworth, Karen Givvin

In this article, the authors share some of the methodological lessons learned from the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 1995 and TIMSS 1999 Video Studies. They focus on their experiences overseeing these large-scale, video-based, cross-national surveys of teaching. The article documents some of the progress the authors made, as well as some of the obstacles they encountered. The authors hope that the ideas shared here help prevent possible missteps, enhance the quality of projects, and encourage researchers to advance the use of video as a methodology.

International comparative assessments of student achievement, such as Trends in Mathematics and Science (TIMSS) and Programme for International Student Achievement (PISA) are becoming increasingly important in the development of evidence-based education policy. The potentially far-reaching influence of such studies underscores the need for these assessments to be valid and reliable. In education, increasing recognition is being given to motivational factors which impact on student learning. This research considers a possible threat to the validity of such studies by investigating the influence the amount of effort invested by test-takers has on their outcomes. In large-scale educational assessments, such as the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) and the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), a primary concern is with the estimation of the population-level characteristics of a number of latent variables and the relationships between latent variables and other variables. Typically these studies are undertaken in contexts in which there are constraints on sample size and individual student response time, yet there are high expectations with regard to the breadth of content coverage. As a tool for studying and improving teaching, video offers tremendous learning opportunities. Videotaped lessons enable teachers to efficiently and effectively 'visit' classrooms not only in their own school, district or country, but also in other countries. Through observing and analysing videotaped lessons teachers can learn about real teaching alternatives as they are actually practised. As part of the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 1999 Video Study, over 600 mathematics lessons from seven different countries were videotaped and analysed. The Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) is a survey of mathematics and science achievement sponsored by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement. With more than 45 participating countries, three target populations, more than thirty languages, 15,000 schools, more than half a million students, TIMSS is the largest and most ambitious international study of educational achievement ever undertaken. Students participating in the assessment were administered one of eight achievement tests that contain items in mathematics and science, using a variety of item formats.
