In a global context where Western models and theories continue to dominate and influence adult educational research, multi-vocal perspectives of meaning making and learning from educators raised and educated in the East and West can contribute to more nuanced dialogue and exchange. Utilizing collaborative autoethnography, a qualitative research method that explores society through the lens of self in relation to other (Chang, Ngunjiri & Hernandez, 2013), we provide a window and a mirror into the complexity of East-West learning dynamics as two multicultural Asian immigrant academics educated and raising our children in the West. Together, as mothers, adult educators and …

Semi-structured interviews were conducted in order to collect rich, descriptive data. Interviews were transcribed and open coding was conducted by each researcher independently. Axial coding was performed in unison until a consensus for categories was reached. Several themes emerged …

An Appreciative Dialogue Between East And West, Ann Brooks, Qi Sun

Adult Education Research Conference

In the context of globalized world, many countries have encountered similar changes and challenges. Learning from one another becomes critical to better understand the strengths and limitations of different theoretical and methodological approaches of education and adult education in particular. International and comparative education have historically demonstrated an effective way of learning from each other. Yet learning from each other seems to become very limited. Instead, learning from the West has become the norm due to its dominant economic position, a legacy of colonialism, the exportation of education, and the development of English as the lingua franca of scholarly publishing …

The Imperative Of The School Choice Option Of Nclb: In Whose Interest?, Teri Jones

Georgia Educational Research Association Conference

Since No Child Left Behind (NCLB) became law, educators have faced challenges trying to protect the common good of a public education while, at the same time, developing and/or reviewing proposals to provide for the school choice option of NCLB. In the debate over market-driven education versus traditional public education, many times, the ideologies behind each approach come into direct conflict. Educators and legislators need to be able to identify when privileged interests are at the core of reforms or if the education of each student is the primary interest being served.

This project provides a real life portrait of …
