A Vision For Administering Elementary Schools : A Reflective Essay, J. Lewis Curtis Jan 2000

A Vision For Administering Elementary Schools : A Reflective Essay, J. Lewis Curtis

Graduate Research Papers

The administrative leader not only has responsibilities for his/her own actions, but is equally responsible for the actions of many others including teachers, students, cooks, secretaries, teacher associates, and custodial staff. All of these workers are under the administrator's direct supervision, which makes it nearly impossible for him/her to know what everyone is doing, when they are doing it, and why they attempt to do it. However, what seems like such an enormous task is also the reason that administrative leadership is so exciting and challenging.

I will highlight what I perceive to be the critical elements ...

Classroom Management Issues For Teaching Assistants, Jiali Luo, Laurie H Bellows, Marilyn Grady Jan 2000

Classroom Management Issues For Teaching Assistants, Jiali Luo, Laurie H Bellows, Marilyn Grady

Faculty Publications in Educational Administration

For many graduate teaching assistants, the task of planning, organizing, motivating, and controlling classroom environments can be overwhelming. Empirical research pertaining to major classroom management problems experienced by TAs is scarce. This article is a report of a survey study regarding TA classroom management at a large, land-grant Research 1 University. The study provides specific information about TAs’ perceptions of classroom management experiences and concerns based on TA type, gender, teaching experience, and academic discipline. The results of the study indicate that international and U.S. TAs experienced many common problems, but each of the two types of TAs also ...

Institutional Activities In International Higher Education : An Assessment Of Advancement Strategies Used At Selected Small Church-Related Colleges And Universities, Janeric Arne Gustavsson

Dissertations

Problem. Small church-related colleges and universities are experiencing financial difficulties. This study assesses the institutional advancement programs at selected Seventh-day Adventist colleges and universities. The purpose of this examination was to analyze "what is" to determine the present-day process of the advancement function, and what "ought to be." These data will also suggest potential areas for growth and development.

Method . The study uses a non-experimental, descriptive design. To accomplish the purpose of the study, the literature on institutional advancement was reviewed to find a useable framework. The instrument used for this study was the one used in Willmer's (1980 ...

Higher Education's Changing Contours: The Policy Implications Of An Emerging System, Patrick M. Callan, Joni E. Finney Jan 2000

Higher Education's Changing Contours: The Policy Implications Of An Emerging System, Patrick M. Callan, Joni E. Finney

GSE Publications

American higher education is remarkably adaptive. A "system" only in the broadest sense of the term, it has been flexible enough to absorb and adapt to broad changes that, at the time, were outside the traditional purview of mainstream colleges and universities—for example, the land grant movement, the creation of community colleges, the passage of the GI Bill, and the need to serve increasing numbers of adult students. On the threshold of the twenty-first century, American higher education faces yet another new movement, one that has been described variously as "part-time," "postbaccalaureate," or "non-degree" education. But for public policy ...

A Preferred Vision For Administering Elementary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Carole J. Bernard

Graduate Research Papers

Working together in a cohort group and acting as a quasi-administrator has afforded me the opportunity to receive theoretical knowledge as well as on-the-job training. The cohort has also helped me as a participant develop an understanding and respect for individuals from different backgrounds and experiences. Through on-the-job training I have been able to develop and practice my own leadership style while working and learning effective strategies from my principal. The blending of these two aspects of leadership experience have contributed significantly to prepare me as a future principal. I believe the cohort, a cadre of leaders, is dedicated to ...

Promoting College Enrollment Through Early Intervention, Laura W. Perna Jan 2000

Promoting College Enrollment Through Early Intervention, Laura W. Perna

GSE Publications

For more than 30 years, the federal government has focused on increasing the postsecondary educational opportunities for individuals and groups by providing students with financial aid to offset the costs of attendance. Although financial resources are important, policymakers, researchers, and other observers are increasingly concluding that merely making financial aid available to students is not enough to ensure equal educational opportunity for all students, particularly those who are economically and educationally disadvantaged (Gladieux, Astor, and Swail, 1998; Gladieux and Swail, 1998).

This article sets the stage for understanding early intervention by describing the ways in which such programs recognize and ...

Principal Succession: Realities Encountered By Successor Principals During The Succession Process, Kenneth Lester Rigdon Jan 2000

Principal Succession: Realities Encountered By Successor Principals During The Succession Process, Kenneth Lester Rigdon

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In order to better understand the realities of principal succession (an interactive sequencing process for changing school administrators) it was the purpose of this study to examine the relationship between four organizational frames (structural, human resource, political, and symbolic) delineated by Bolman and Deal (1997) and three traits noted in the literature as evident during school principal succession (predecessor leave-taking, succession source, and experience). There is little research regarding school principal succession, and concern exists regarding the adequacy of transition practices within organizations. A questionnaire was employed to survey all school principals in the state of Kansas who succeeded during ...

Cultural Change Paradigms And Administrator Communication, Theodore J. Kowalski Jan 2000

Cultural Change Paradigms And Administrator Communication, Theodore J. Kowalski

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications

Public school reform has taken three distinct turns over the past two decades. In the early 1980s, most policymakers blamed a lack of educational productivity on lazy students. Influenced by this argument, virtually every state legislature enacted laws lengthening the school year, lengthening the school day, and increasing high school graduation requirements. Within a relatively short period of time, however, the would-be reformers concluded that intensification of student experiences was insufficient to produce significant improvements. While not abandoning their original conviction, they shifted their attention to a second target-educators. The result was a flurry of proposals to revise or eliminate ...
